Cruz and Carly

#1 Post by flockofseagulls104 » Wed Apr 27, 2016 3:05 pm

Two well spoken, extremely intelligent and serious candidates. Are there enough intelligent and serious citizens to elect them? Not sure there are, but I hope so.

That is my opinion. Can't wait to see the blowback.

When even very conservative Republicans favor Trump over Cruz, it's tough to see what his constituency is, unless it's former candidates who have been insulted by Donald Trump, and that's admittedly a sizable number but not quite enough to win an election.

Says the person who is personally acquainted with every conservative Republican in the US.

If we are speaking of self-described conservatives, I know of at least three former students who give the lie to BiT's statement. Of course, Ted Cruz claims there are 80 million evangelical Christians in the US, because that number was pulled by one survey who asked people to describe themselves.

If we are talking about an objective definition, that's more troublesome, because I don't think there's a good impartial definition out there. In addition to Rusher's three camps (social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, and foreign policy conservatives) there is now a significant portion of Republican voters who are ultra-nationalist. All in all, though, I think it's incredibly naive to say that there are "no" conservative Republicans supporting Trump. Are you seriously calling Sen. Sessions not a conservative Republican? How about Chris Collins? Paul LePage? Rick Scott? If these are not conservative Republicans, what are they?

Those who support Trump repeat and repeat and repeat the "he says what everyone is angry about". They aren't necessarily social, fiscal conservatives. They are blathering more than I ever have in years of wack. If you want someone who is mad just vote for your fucking neighbor. They're probably as qualified. This is an election of personality, the front runners of which are incompetent or jailworthy. And, fungible.
Well, then

The term used by SSS was "very conservative". I'll stand by my comment. Trump is a liberal, aside from being a buffoon, and anyone supporting him over Cruz, Kasich, or pick any of the other candidates besides Bush, cannot by definition be "very conservative". Period.

Don't you know? SSS knows everything about conservatives. He is familiar with and has bought into every stereotype he has ever been fed. Hook, line and sinker. If you think you are in any small way conservative, better check with him before you do anything.

I submit that for a conservative Republican, the only issue that really matters is immigration. Maybe Cruz is better than Trump on immigration, maybe not, but we have to look at things through that lens. To dismiss the conservativeness of someone who comes down on the other side of that from you is not going to get you anywhere.

Looking at it from a partisan persective, the Left makes no secret of their desire to import enough people from wherever to turn various states Blue. As that happens in more and more states, it becomes less and less likely that a conservative can win in the future.

I believe that open borders advocates have put very little thought as to what this country will be in the future beyond that-but they don't seem to care.

Victor Davis Hanson just provided another glimpse of the dystopian "Open Borders" present as it exists in California's Central Valley today. Simply put, the Rule of Law in the Central Valley is gone.

<<<How can such a green state that refuses to sell plastic bags at the coastal grocery markets prove indifferent to the spoliation of its rural hinterland?<<

<<<California is hyper-lawful and lawless, completely free and without freedom, a condition entirely predicated on one’s sense of income and dutifulness. <<<

<<<We are back to the Wild West circa 1890; and all the iPhones, apps, and Teslas cannot change that fact. But with one key difference: In 1900, lawlessness in California was a result of the natural wild and the frontier; today it is a symptom of civilized wild and ideology. Historically, the latter is far more dangerous than the former.<<<<

A very conservative person does not abandon the ship for a single port of call (immigration).

I'm not saying all folks supporting Trump aren't conservative. Just none are very conservative. The truth is, no one knows what Trump's real position is on anything. It changes daily. Hell, his own kids couldn't vote for him because they are registered Democrats. Because he is, or was, or pretended to be, or something.

He's a salesman and he is selling Trump. The problem is, the country will get another Trump University. The hype won't match the product. And the Republican party brand will suffer. But he won't care, his money has and will go to the Democrats. He's buying 8 more years of play.

There are no very conservative Republicans favoring Trump over Cruz.
Here's the CNN exit polls, which asked Republican voters to classify themselves as very conservative, somewhat conservative, or moderate.

Very Conservative Voters:

PA: Trump 48; Cruz 41; Kasich 10.
MD: Trump 54; Cruz 34; Kasich 11
NY: Trump 62; Cruz 27; Kasich 11
WI: Cruz 65; Trump 28; Kasich 5
OH: Trump 36; Kasich 33; Cruz 26
NC: Cruz 54; Trump 33
MO: Trump 43; Cruz 40; Kasich 10
FL: Trump 48, Cruz 26; Rubio 23
MS: Cruz 51; Trump 41
MI: Cruz 38; Trump 35; Kasich 14; Rubio 11
VA: Trump 37; Cruz 31; Rubio 23
VT: Trump 27; Kasich 22; Rubio 21; Cruz 19
TX: Cruz 57; Trump 23; Rubio 11
TN: Cruz 39; Trump 34: Rubio 17
OK: Cruz 45; Trump 29; Rubio 19
MA: Trump 47; Kasich 26; Rubio 16; Cruz 7
GA: Cruz 37; Trump 35; Rubio 17
AR: Cruz 47; Trump 27; Rubio 22
AL: Trump 47; Cruz 29; Rubio 15
NV: Trump 38; Cruz 34; Rubio 22
SC: Cruz 35; Trump 29; Rubio 19
NH: Trump 36; Cruz 23; Rubio 13
IA: Cruz 44; Trump 21: Rubio 19

In the earlier races, Cruz usually led among very conservative voters but in most of them, Trump was a respectable and sometimes a very close second. In the more recent races, Trump has usually won among very conservative voters.

http://www.cnn.com/election/primaries/polls

The issue isn't whether Trump is or is not conservative according to you, me, or the voters themselves. It's whether self-described very conservative voters voted for him. And apparently a large number of the Republican voters who think of themselves as very conservative voted for Trump in state after state.

I will very reluctantly support Trump if he is the nominee, unless justice is done and Hillary is indicted, and the Democrats put up someone even borderline palatable. But I am scared for the country if either Trump or Hillary are elected. Neither have very much respect for the Constitution, and I suspect Trump doesn't even know what it is. The only difference is Trump gives lip service to issues that matter to me. Hillary believes I am her enemy.

Exactly what I didn't want to get into. Such a waste of time trading barbs. Proves and accomplishes nothing. Sort of like what Trump does.

Headline: Cruz taps Fiorina

Somewhere in a backroom, Trump handlers are having an emergency meeting to discuss how to prevent Donald from "going there" in his next public appearance.
