RIP Darryl Dawkins

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Thu Aug 27, 2015 1:43 pm

Former NBA player who was the first player drafted into the NBA straight out of high school in 1975. He was attending high school in Orlando while I was living there while going to law school. His NBA career was noted for some backboard shattering dunks. He played 15 years in the NBA then overseas before retiring from the Harlem Globetrotters in 2000.

Age 58.

Sad to see that. He was quite the draw (although after awhile the backboard-breaking dunks grew wearysome).

I always recalled the dunks were used in a Chico Esquella skit on SNL at the time. Chico was in the middle of a paternity suit, and "couldn't talk about it." When he was showing the Thunderdunks, he said "They should make the backboards out of something else. Wood. Or metal. Not rubber. Rubber break. No can talk about it!"

I gotta say, I always kinda liked Chocolate Thunder. --Bob
