For Memorial Day

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Mon May 25, 2015 11:46 am

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I immediately thought of several Simpson's jokes, but resisted them and looked up "Flanders Fields" instead. It seemed much more appropriate for today.

The Europeans and Canadians usually do the poppy thing on Remembrance Sunday (our Veterans Day). I usually wear a poppy pin on both holidays.

One regret I had on our London trip was not getting a picture of this which was about half done when we visited. The numbers - over 800,000 Brits and colonials - for WWI is staggering.
