Woo-hoo we broke the record

Lots of people 'round here have been despondent (because we are crazy) that even with the 7-ft snowcliffs around here we hadn't yet broken the actual snowfall record. That was set in '96, a year when the snow melted or got rained away between falls, so didn't form cliffs. With today's 2.5" snowfall, we are now officially over the record for Boston snowfall in recorded history.

To quote Boston's Mayor Walsh, we are 1st in everything. But there won't be a parade.

In contrast to your snowcliffs: We had near record-breaking snow and cold temperatures up to last week.

Yesterday, I misjudged a wake wave from a passing powerboat and dunked myself in the river from my kayak. While the water was rather 'brisk' the day reached the low 70's with lots of sunshine. Managed to get a nice several hour long trip on the water in during the afternoon.

Not without it's dangers though - I did wind up with a bit of sunburn on my arms.

Huh? 96? really? I lived in Malden that winter/spring, and I have no memories of the snow being bad. I do remember the following spring getting an April 1 snowstorm that shut down the T.

I'm going w/ what the local weatherpeople are throwing on their screens. For total snowfall. I don't recall '97 or '96 as being particularly bad. I was here for '78 and remember it as being in a way magical, after the snow fell that is. While it was falling, I was lucky the mean bus driver, who stranded later people, let me on the bus. A bus can't go if its over a particular weight; that was driver's excuse. But it hadn't hit that weight, & people in life-or-death situations were being stranded. Since I had 3 or 4 miles to go & was young then & could have walked it even in a blizzard I should have volunteered to leave if a person with farther to go would be let on in my stead. I didn't volunteer, but doubt that driver would have let passengers do reasonable things like that anyway.

No one who lived through this winter here is likely to forget it. Or think it magical. Well, maybe the tiny children sledding down the snow piles before they turned to filthy ice.

If they'd shut down the T instead of plowing it through storms 'til it broke this time around, it would not be in the mess it currently is.

I salute y'all for having the strength and fortitude to persevere in the face of those record snow falls. Everything falls to pieces down here if we get 4-5 inches of snow. OTOH- that 83 degrees felt pretty good this afternoon. We won't get to moaning too much until July when we have 100 degree days & 80% humidity.

It was in the low 60's here today. Most of the snow we got in January-February has melted. I can actually see my front lawn. It's kind of brown and ugly looking. Tomorrow it's back to the 40's. I heard a rumor that we might get a snowstorm next week. Ugh. Florida is going to be really nice.

I was a meteorology student at the time, and I do seem to recall a number of NorthEast snowstorms around that time. I think there may have been a big storm right after the New Year in '96. I'd have still guessed '93 for the snowfall record, but maybe that massive Nor'Easter didn't hit Boston as bad as it did the rest of the area...
