Savannah grandfather, shot in the head, shoots back

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Mon Feb 02, 2015 10:06 am

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Ronald Williams is a retired juvenile corrections officer, a grandfather, a leader in his Tremont Park neighborhood. He's also armed.

That's something a group of criminals found out the hard way Sunday morning.

It was a little after 3 a.m. Ronald Williams heard his dogs barking. He walked outside.

"All I seen was the car was out there," Williams said. "It was running. No one was in it."

Williams saw two men standing on the corner.

"Something wasn't right."

He called 911, gave police the tag number, and waited, Williams said.

Ten minutes later, another car -- a grey Dodge charger, pulled up. The men on the corner got inside.

"And the next thing I know, they was shooting out of the grey Charger."

Two bullets hit Williams, one in his thigh, another in his temple.

"They tell me the bullet is going to be there," Williams said. "They're not taking it out, so it's still there."

The suspects fled when Williams pulled his own gun and started shooting back.

"You know, I guess they didn't want to get killed."

Williams best guess as to why those men shot at him is that they wanted to get him away from that first car -- the Nissan they'd left running in front of his house. That Nissan matches the description of a vehicle spotted minutes earlier -- a mile and a half away -- when suspects fired on a police officer near 39th Street and Ogeechee Road.

Sunday, a drop of blood remained on Williams' doorway. His grandchildren played inside. There was a bullet still in the street.

A reporter asked Williams whether he'd been afraid.

"I didn't think about that," he said. "I thought about getting another clip."

The suspects remain at large.

If you know anything about what happened to Mr. Williams, if you saw anything unusual on or around Ogeechee Road about 3 a.m., please, call or text Crimestoppers.
