SSS Joins the 21st Century

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Mon Jul 28, 2014 5:58 pm

I've been trying to get my website back together, and it's a lot trickier than it was when I first set it up years ago. Back then, everything was fairly straightforward, but now, I realize I've got to be on a other social media sites as well and tie the whole darned thing together. The site is going to be about movies and related topics and I'm keeping it nonpolitical.

The reason I'm doing this is to make myself more marketable as far as potential employers are concerned. I'll be able to use the website to showcase writing samples and hopefully some degree of creativity that will set me apart from the nine million other middle-aged guys out there looking for work.

Although the website isn't up, yet, my Facebook and Twitter pages are (I even sent out my first twit today). I'll be using them primarily to funnel traffic to the website. Somehow, when I signed onto Facebook, I had four friend requests within a minute, none of whom I'd ever heard of. I'm not sure how that works.

For anyone interested, the Facebook page is: www.facebook.com/silverscreenvideos

and the Twitter page is: www.twitter.com/silverscrvideos

As you undoubtably know, they call 'em "tweets". The twits that really believe in that thing do (duck & cover).

So far, I have to say I'm confused by Facebook. Once I got my pages looking the way I wanted to, I accepted the four friend requests I had on the theory that it couldn't hurt. And last night when I went to bed I had four friends. This morning I have three. I'm not sure how you can lose friends that quickly, especially when I haven't tried to forward any of my Bored posts. I also wound up sending a friend request to someone I never heard of and I'm not sure how I did that. The request is still pending but I'm apparently following that person.

Now, I did look up a number of business pages to see how they were set up so I'd get a better idea of what to do with mine. And one of them was the restaurant we ate at over the weekend since they had painted on their wall about their Facebook and Twitter presence, I felt they were reasonably serious about it. Somehow I wound up liking them and I'm not sure how I did that (it's a pretty good restaurant so I left it alone).

This is scary how you can do things and not be aware of them. On the plus side, I did figure out how to upload my fancy new logo that I paid $19 for, and I also figured out how to make it my Bored avatar. So, I'm making some sort of progress.

Who are you, and why did you hijack SSS's account and add an avatar? He always told us he didn't know how to upload one...

I spent an hour last night trying to figure out how to send someone an e-mail on Facebook thanking them for liking my page. So I figured my night was already shot to hell and I might as well spend another 2 or 3 hours trying to figure out those avatar thingies.

Those of us who have liked your page get anything you post on it in our News Feed, no need to do personal messages. We don't get emails anyway, just a notification that we have a private message waiting if we're not signed-on and a chat notification if we are.

But just because something is in your News Feed doesn't mean you actually see it. Unless you have a low number of friends, like maybe 50 or so, it's pretty much impossible to keep up with everything. And if you have hundreds or thousands of friends, I think Facebook just uses its algorithms to decide what to show you and you never see the rest. I waste a fair amount of time on Facebook, but I know that what I see is just a random sampling of what others wanted me to see.

That's true unfortunately. However if you turn on Following you'll get notified of every one.
