The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 11, Thursday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Thu Jun 26, 2014 4:59 am

"Ten!"

I don't think that we've had a movie themed Thursday round yet, so let's do that today.

"I'm Shocked, Shocked to Find That Gambling Is Going On in the QoD!"

Ten questions all about one of the greatest films of all time, "Casablanca". 16 points for each correct answer. Your "Fat Chance" bet may not amount to a hill of beans, but give it to me anyway.

Answers are due by Friday 6/27 at 4 PM EDT.

1. The title of the play on which it was based.
2. The surname of the twin brothers who co-wrote the script.
3. The number of Oscar nominations it received.
4. The ranking that the AFI gave it on the original "100 Years...100 Movies" list in 1998.
5. The surname of Ingrid Bergman's character, Ilsa.
6. Either of the two foreign songs that can be heard just before Renault shuts down the nightclub.
7. The destination of the plane that Ilsa boards at the end.
8. The legendary comedian who may or may not have had an uncredited cameo.
9. The title of the proposed sequel.
10. What caused Humphrey Bogart's son to suggest putting arms on the Venus de Milo.
"Fat Chance" bet: ___%
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. The title of the play on which it was based. -- Everybody Comes to Rick's

2. The surname of the twin brothers who co-wrote the script. -- Epstein

3. The number of Oscar nominations it received. -- Eight

4. The ranking that the AFI gave it on the original "100 Years...100 Movies" list in 1998. -- #2

Naturally, "Citizen Kane" topped both the original list and the 10th anniversary list. "Casablanca" and "The Godfather" swapped the #2 and #3 spots in 2007.

5. The surname of Ingrid Bergman's character, Ilsa. -- Lund was her maiden name, Laszlo was her married name. Either one is fine.

6. Either of the two foreign songs that can be heard just before Renault shuts down the nightclub. -- "La Marseillaise" or "Die Wacht am Rhein"

Laszlo demands that Rick's club band play "La Marseillaise" in order to drown out Strasser and his officers singing that patriotic German song.

7. The destination of the plane that Ilsa boards at the end. -- Lisbon

8. The legendary comedian who may or may not have had an uncredited cameo. -- Jack Benny

9. The title of the proposed sequel. -- I should have been more specific on this question. I was looking for the proposed film sequel, which was "Brazzaville". But since I left open the possibility that somebody would answer with the published novel sequel, As Time Goes By, I'll go ahead and accept it.

10. What caused Humphrey Bogart's son to suggest putting arms on the Venus de Milo. -- Ted Turner's colorization of "Casablanca"

6/24 + 6/25 + 6/26 scores (7 participants)
Bob Juch - 24 + 0 + 112 = 136
ShamelessWeasel - 44 + 16 + 64 = 124
franktangredi - 20 + 0 + 80 = 100
jarnon - 32 + 0 + 48 = 80
kroxquo - 12 + 0 + 64 = 76
Bob78164 - 20 + 0 + 48 = 68
themanintheseersuckersuit - 4 + 0 + 32 = 36
