The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 5, Wednesday
"4-by-4"
It's time once again for the reason why everybody on the Bored hates me. No, not because I won't allow certain people to dictate my life and jeopardize my career. Because it's grid time! Woo woooooo!
Since we're at the second level, I will pay 4 points for each valid foursome with its valid connection, 4 points for completing a grid, and 20 points for completing both grids. 60 points total.
Answers are due by Thursday 5/8 at 4 PM EDT.
Grid 1:
BOSTON | BRUNO | CAREER | CAROLINA
DAKOTA | DARTMOUTH | FORNICATES | GAMBIT

I thought everybody tried to do that. For my part, each one of my posts (when spoken backwards at a rate of exactly 66.6 words per minute) contains a subliminal message carefully designed to sap and impurify all of your precious bodily fluids. Do you feel sapped yet?franktangredi wrote:Wow, I didn't realize people here had the power to do that to anybody!Pastor Fireball wrote:No, not because I won't allow certain people to dictate my life and jeopardize my career.

Re: The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 5, Wednesday
Better scores on these grids than last week's grids.
Grid 1:
BOSTON | BRUNO | CAREER | CAROLINA
DAKOTA | DARTMOUTH | FORNICATES | GAMBIT
HOE | KOREA | LENA | POLE
QUEEN | SEPTEMBER | TURKEY | VALENTINE'S DAY
Two of the categories from the perfect solution were found. I'll start with them.
1. CAROLINA | DAKOTA | KOREA | POLE
Places that can be "North" or "South".
2. BOSTON | DARTMOUTH | LENA | SEPTEMBER
Massacres. Valentine's Day was a distractor, but still got you some points. Turkey was a bit dodgy, but I accepted it (even though "Turkish massacre" redirects to "Armenian massacre").
The other two categories that produced the perfect solution?
3. BRUNO | CAREER | GAMBIT | VALENTINE'S DAY
Films featuring Shirley MacLaine. She was also in a film called "Carolina".
4. FORNICATES | HOE | QUEEN | TURKEY
You're gonna love this one. All of these words were notorious answers from TV game shows. A contestant answered "fornicates" to Phyllis Diller's clue of "masticates" on "Super Password". Ken Jennings famously responded with "What's a hoe?" on an episode on "Jeopardy!" A wife answered "queen" to the question "My husband is a closet ______" on "The Newlywed Game". And there was the infamous episode of "Family Fortunes" (England's version of "Family Feud") where a contestant answered "turkey" to all five Fast Money questions. "September" also could have worked here.
Grid 2:
ABBOTT | BERLIN | CONRAD | DIAMOND
DOWN | FIELDS | FOUNTAIN | FRANCESCA
JERUSALEM | KEROUAC | LONDON | PARIS
RICHARD | RUBY | STOCKHOLM | VANCE
A few world capitals, a few authors, a few Jacks, a couple of gemstones. How exactly did all of this work out?
1. DOWN | FOUNTAIN | JERUSALEM | STOCKHOLM
Syndromes. Fountain syndrome is the obscure one here. That's a physical and mental condition characterized by mental retardation, deafness, and abnormal swelling of the cheeks and lips.
2. CONRAD | FRANCESCA | PARIS | RICHARD
Members of the Hilton family. I think this is the first time that Paris Hilton got a mention in one of my games, and I guarantee it will be the last time.
3. ABBOTT | KEROUAC | LONDON | VANCE
Authors named Jack.
4. BERLIN | DIAMOND | FIELDS | RUBY
This was the toughie. These are all Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees. Irving Berlin, Neil Diamond, Dorothy Fields, and Harry Ruby.
Bob J won the round again. We'll wrap up the week and go on vacation tomorrow. Actually, you guys can go on vacation after you answer tomorrow's questions if you want. I have to grade the answers on Monday before I can go.
