I just got some disturbing news. Nothing serious, no health issues or anything. Allow me to explain.
For over 30 years I've been attending a gaming convention known as GenCon - originally sponsored by the company that produced Dungeons & Dragons in its various iterations, and now sponsored by the company that bought the company that bought out the company that produced D&D (TSR bought out by Wizards of the Coast, bought out by Hasbro). For 25 of those years I've been part of an event known originally as the D&D Open and later the D&D Championship. By judging that event I got into the convention free and got a shared hotel room near the convention center. This year Wizards has pulled the plug on this oldest continuously run event at GenCon - the reasons they gave the coordinator included declining signups and "a generation that doesn't see D&D as a competitive event". I didn't participate in this event just for the free room and badge - I enjoyed it. Now, however, it's come to an end. I suppose I could volunteer to run other events (the coordinator said he'd be involved in other events at the convention and would need judges) but it won't be the same.
