Sid Caesar dead at 91

Latimes.com and People.com report that the 1950s TV comedian of Your SHow of SHows died today at age 91. His show made careers out of Mel Brooks, Woody ALlen, Carl Reiner, and Larry Gelbart, among others.

The list of surviving IAMMMMW cast members continues to thin out. Mickey Rooney alone remains of the main cast.

I just acted in a production of Laughter on the 23rd Floor, so I've been very Caesar-conscious lately.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I posted this about a month ago, but it bears mentioning again. Anyone who is a fan of the movie should get the Criterion DVD (it's a combination DVD and Blu-ray) of IAMMMMMW which was recently released. It has much of the footage from the longer road show version of the film, some of which has never been seen since the road show itself, interviews with many of the cast members over the years and audio commentary. The movie itself looks and sounds great (some of the footage in the extended version comes from secondary sources and isn't in great shape). It's selling for a street price around $30 right now but there's probably some sales available from time to time.
