Bridge Playing Lawyer

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I liked the last line of the article:

"In the meantime, for the sake of everyone involved, maybe Rosen should take up chess."

And my first thought was, "boy, put him up against Bobby Fischer in his prime!" (Not that he's doing much these days...)

And the frustrating thing is that there's not much the ACBL can do to help the club. As long as the issue is limited to behavioral problems at club games (as opposed to tournaments), the ACBL's disciplinary bodies lack jurisdiction. --Bob
