Tonight our church observes Tenebrae, a "service of shadows" remembering the death of Jesus. It's a somber service - the choir wears black stoles, the sanctuary is decorated with black cloth everywhere, there is Scripture reading and dirge-like hymns, and even Death makes an appearance, snuffing out candles, one by one, as the Scriptures are read, until finally only one candle remains. The pastor takes that candle and, beckoned by Death, carries it down the center aisle until they reach the back of the sanctuary, at which point Death takes the candle and extinguishes it, leaving the sanctuary in total darkness. It is a truly moving service.
On a lighter note, one of the members of our church "trivia team" (a group that gets together to compete in various local school fund-raisers) is organizing a trivia night for her daughter's school. She's asked me to attend as a "celebrity guest trivia expert" since I was on BAM.
