I know I should know this.

Hey. I never said that I wasn't an idiot when it comes to computers and stuff.

I was trying to find out something about a company and an individual who works there. I'd just as soon that he not know that I was checking them (and him) out. Not that big of a deal if he knows, but I'd prefer that he not.

So, I have two questions: 1) Would they be able to tell that someone clicked on his profile at the company's website (and when); and 2) Would they be able to figure out who did it?

Thanks.

Yes to the first, and possibly yes to the second.

To elaborate: Presumably whoever created the Web site has set up some sort of tracking system to determine whether the site is being visited and what links are being viewed. This would include timestamp information. However although the log might include the IP address from which you clicked, narrowing that down to a specific individual would not be routine. While you can't avoid being detected in general you can use "anonymizer" sites that mask your IP address when you surf the Net.

1. Yes.

2. Possibly. At least as far as an IP address requesting the page, which could possibly be linked to you with more research. If they cared at all.

If he has a profile on the company web site, though, it's got to be a promotional piece with nothing other than what they want the public to read. I doubt that would be very helpful in checking him out.

Also, if you have an AOL account, and use it to sign on to surf the internet, your IP address changes each time you sign on.

Or perhaps use a public computer like at a library? I would presume that would provide some element of anonimity unless the library keeps a log of users. And that would take some effort on the part of the company to track down I would think.

Thanks. I figured that, but wasn't sure.

Like I said, it's no big deal if they (or he) would know.

Thanks again.
