top o' the mornin'®

#1 Post by earendel » Tue Oct 23, 2007 5:24 am

"'Tisn't a fit night out for man nor beast!" It's been raining for somewhere around 17 straight hours - evidently we're gonna get all the rain we didn't get earlier this year in one sitting. I wonder if someone needs to break the box and expose the thiotimoline (obscure SF reference).

Okay, I don't get that reference, but I hope it stops raining for you.

And for New Orleans too. Sounds like they are having trouble.

Rain for California would be a good idea.

Send it our way! They are holding prayer vigils for rain.

NC and GA are just panting for a drop or two. We're hanging in there, but the predictions are for some worsening before it improves.

The kids don't want rain--they'll have to drag the corpses indoors. The blood would wash off and the newspapers would get all soggy. After the haunted stuff is set up in their cousins' yard, they'll be doing the anti-rain dance until Thursday...

I didn't, either, but google came through for me.

And, hey, this sounds like the kind of in-joke that a chemist like you would love! :)

Thiotimoline is a fictitious chemical compound conceived by science fiction author Isaac Asimov and first described in a spoof scientific paper entitled "The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline" in 1948.
And it continues from there...

I wish we could send it to SoCal because they REALLY need it to quench those fires.

The joke is based on the last short story that Asimov wrote about thiotimoline - a group of scientists, after watching the thiotimoline dissolve, put the stuff in a sealed container, trying to "fool" the substance. However a freak hurricane struck the area and one of the scientists broke open the box to allow the thiotimoline to be exposed to water, causing the hurricane to dissipate. The implication was that the storm "had" to destroy the lab and the box in order to trigger the reaction.
