Lyrically Speaking -- 3/4/13

#1 Post by AnnieCamaro » Mon Mar 04, 2013 1:42 am

Hi, everybody! Long time, no see. As most of you know, I had to leave the Bored rather suddenly a few years ago to come to this really cool place where I am now. But, when I found out that “Encore Monday” was coming up, I got special permission to post again via eyelid messaging. (The technology up here is amazing!)

Anyway, while I used to like mostly classical music, and I was particularly excited to meet Mr. Mozart, I’ve had the chance to meet lots of musicians whose compositions cover all kinds of music from almost everywhere on Earth, and even perform with some of them at special concerts. For example, my buddy Jim rewrote the lyrics to one of his songs to make it “Annie, Won’t You Light My Fire,” and we added harps to the instrument line-up. The result was downright celestial! Because she knew I liked riding in cars, my special friend Janis (I just call her Jan) and I sang a duet on one of her funny songs about a Mercedes-Benz. At the end, the two of us zoomed around in a car we made out of clouds. Even the Big Boss, who also was mentioned in the lyrics, had to laugh.

So, I wanted to submit one more LS game for Encore Monday. This time, I’ve cut out the middle man, Evil Squirrel. Long-time LS players may remember that every time he got his hands on my games, he would change one particular word for another particular word in the song titles or mess up the lyrics just a little. This used to make me so mad! But, since now I’m all about forgiveness and understanding, I don’t hold a grudge. I just made those changes myself, so he won’t get the satisfaction of tricking me. Haha, ES! (You won’t get any additional Annie Bonus points for substituting the word that ES likes best, but do it anyway because that’s part of this particular game!)

I’ve got to run now, because I’ve met this cool African musician who is going to teach me to play the kalimba. He uses his thumbs, but both of us think I can do it with my dew claws, so this should be fun. (Note: No kalimba songs are included in this game. Maybe next time.....)

Love, peace, and joy,
Annie

1 point for the artist, 1 point for the amended title, and 1 point for correcting the amended lyric....

1. Makes no difference
Where you are
Day or night time
You`re like a shining acorn

2. She`s so young at heart
She likes the pleasure of his company
She cuts the inside groove
With her silver claws

3. So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That's right, put your apples down, getting everybody fired up

4. The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just scamper away

5. Oh, she's a big girl
She's standing one foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes
In the big city

6. A drawer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,

7. Ladies in the sun
Listening to the radio
Like flowers on the sand
A birdfeeder in my mind

8. Scritch was just a seven letter word
Never heard how absurd it could be
But now I can't believe this is real
How I feel now you steal
My heart away from me

9. Oh, 4, 5, 6, c'mon and get your nuts
Now you don't need that money
When you look like that, do ya honey?

10. I've been singing with my band
Across the wire, across the land
I seen every red-furred floozy on the way

11. Just remember how he was so mangy
And all the tacky things he did to you
No need to signify 'cause he's not worth your time
You need to find someone that's true to you ooh

12. Running into the midnight With her tail whipping in the wind
Reaching into the heart of the darkness
For the tenderness within

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that ES could modify the same way as the songs above, and give your amended lyric for an extra point.

5 Point Bonus: Mr. littlebeast always used to tease Mr. tubadave about one of the songs above because it was the #1 song on the Hot 100 on the day he was born. Which one is it?

Spoiler
Very busy weekend led to me missing the LS. FWIW, I think I would have only gotten five of them, but that includes one (Too Many Walls) that you said was a skunk and two others (To Live and Die In LA and Hippychick) that were almost-skunks. So there's that.

1. Diamond Squirrel (#41 in '73; unranked all time) - Seals and Crofts. Acorn should be Star
2. Hot Squirrels in Love (#189 in '83; since there are only three songs behind it that year...) - Loverboy. Claws should be Spoon
3. Nope
4. To All The Squirrels I've Loved Before (#161 in '84; unranked all time) - Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias. Scamper should be Carry Me. Despite its ranking, this song holds a special place in my heart. It is one of five songs that I did with my friends over the span of a few years at one of those Superstar Recording studios that were found at the Boardwalk in Ocean City, MD (and probably many other places). I did the Willie part and my friend Mike did the Julio part. I still have the tape and if I ever got around to digitizing it, I'd probably play it quite often. Very fun and very hilarious. We weren't....good.
5. Island Squirrel (#38 in '75; unranked all time) - Elton John. One should be Six
6. Nope
7. Nope
8. Naughty Squirrels (Need Love Too) (#153 in '88; unranked all time) - Samantha Fox. Scritch should be Love
9. Are You Gonna Be My Squirrel (#10 in '04; #784 all time) - Jet. Nuts should be Tricks
10. Fat Bottomed Squirrels (#47 in '79; #1,398 all time)_ - Queen. Red Furred should be Blue Eyed?
11. Nope
12. Nope

Kroxquo - Sour Girl (#1 in '00; #34 all time) - Stone Temple Pilots. I Was a Superman but big teeth are deceiving

Bonus - I think it's #5

Diamond Squirrel -- Seals and Crofts. Not acorn but star

2. She`s so young at heart
She likes the pleasure of his company
She cuts the inside groove
With her silver claws

Hot Squirrels in Love -- Loverboy. Not claws but spoon

3. So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That's right, put your apples down, getting everybody fired up

Hollaback Squirrel -- Gwen Stefani. Not apples but pom-pons

4. The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just scamper away

To all the Squirrels I've Loved Before -- Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias. Not scamper but carry me

5. Oh, she's a big girl
She's standing one foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes
In the big city

Island Squirrel -- Elton John. Not one but six

6. A drawer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,

Cinnamon Squirrel -- Neil Young. Not drawer but dreamer. That one took me a while.

7. Ladies in the sun
Listening to the radio
Like flowers on the sand
A birdfeeder in my mind

Rock and Roll Squirrels --- John Fogerty. Not birdfeeder but rainbow

8. Scritch was just a seven letter word
Never heard how absurd it could be
But now I can't believe this is real
How I feel now you steal
My heart away from me

Naughty Squirrels -- Samantha Fox. Not Scritch but love, not seven but four

9. Oh, 4, 5, 6, c'mon and get your nuts
Now you don't need that money
When you look like that, do ya honey?

Are you Gonna Be My Squirrel -- Jet. Not nuts but kicks

10. I've been singing with my band
Across the wire, across the land
I seen every red-furred floozy on the way

Fat Bottomed Squirrels -- Queen. Not red-furred but blue-eyed

11. Just remember how he was so mangy
And all the tacky things he did to you
No need to signify 'cause he's not worth your time
You need to find someone that's true to you ooh

Squirrelfriend -- Pebbles. not mangy but untrue

12. Running into the midnight With her tail whipping in the wind
Reaching into the heart of the darkness
For the tenderness within

That Squirrel Could Sing -- Jackson Browne. Not tail but clothes.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that ES could modify the same way as the songs above, and give your amended lyric for an extra point.

Don't be a Squirrel About It -- Kelly Clarkson. "I guess it's true that trees can grow in different directions
I chose the high road and you chose to be a squirrel

5 Point Bonus: Mr. littlebeast always used to tease Mr. tubadave about one of the songs above because it was the #1 song on the Hot 100 on the day he was born. Which one is it? I don't think Dave's old enough for Neil Young, so I'll guess Fat Bottomed Squirrels.

Love, peace, and joy,
Annie

Let's try one that's nearly perfect, already:

Don't sit under the apple tree

For anyone else but me!
For anyone else but me!
No! No! No! No!

Scritches to Annie for taking the time to host this game, which was one of the best-loved in LSWE history, and was a shoo-in to get an Encore Monday spot. Under the original schedule for this year's game, I planned on having this game run on Squirrel Appreciation Day, January 21st. But when the game got pushed back to where the 21st became the first day of the game, I didn't think it would be right to lead off with it. Oh well, you can't win them all...

Most people either remembered, or figured out, that in this game you HAD to substitute Squirrel for Girl in the title to get the song credit. The original game from 2009 (which was a Tuesday Wordplay) was the inspiration behind the Annie Bonus that has been in effect now for the past three seasons...

The altered part of the lyrics is underlined, with the corrected lyric provided after the artist...

1. Makes no difference
Where you are
Day or night time
You`re like a shining acorn
Diamond Squirrel - Seals and Crofts - star

2. She`s so young at heart
She likes the pleasure of his company
She cuts the inside groove
With her silver claws
Hot Squirrels In Love - Loverboy - spoon

3. So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That's right, put your apples down, getting everybody fired up
Hollaback Squirrel - Gwen Stefani - pom pons (I head this song twice on the way down to Gridiron... and as the brother of three former high school cheerleaders, I do know how to spell pom pons...)

4. The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just scamper away
To All The Squirrels I Loved Before - Julio Iglasias and Willie Nelson - carry me

5. Oh, she's a big girl
She's standing one foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes
In the big city
Island Squirrel - Elton John - six

6. A drawer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,
Cinnamon Squirrel - Neil Young - dreamer (Elwood kroxed this exact lyric in the 2011 finale as a dedication to ES, so credit goes to him for these altered lyrics...)

7. Ladies in the sun
Listening to the radio
Like flowers on the sand
A birdfeeder in my mind
Rock and Roll Squirrels - John Fogerty - rainbow

8. Scritch was just a seven letter word
Never heard how absurd it could be
But now I can't believe this is real
How I feel now you steal
My heart away from me
Naughty Squirrels Need Love Too - Samantha Sq.... er, Fox - love, four

9. Oh, 4, 5, 6, c'mon and get your nuts
Now you don't need that money
When you look like that, do ya honey?
Are You Gonna Be My Squirrel - Jet - kicks

10. I've been singing with my band
Across the wire, across the land
I seen every red-furred floozy on the way
Fat Bottomed Squirrels - Queen - blue-eyed

11. Just remember how he was so mangy
And all the tacky things he did to you
No need to signify 'cause he's not worth your time
You need to find someone that's true to you ooh
Squirrelfriend - Pebbles - untrue (Me and Esto obviously have some differing tastes in music...)

12. Running into the midnight With her tail whipping in the wind
Reaching into the heart of the darkness
For the tenderness within
That Squirrel Could Sing - Jackson Browne - clothes

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that ES could modify the same way as the songs above, and give your amended lyric for an extra point.

I love any kind of bonus that allows my players to get creative. Thank you for all the wonderful squirrel Kroxes you provided!

5 Point Bonus: Mr. littlebeast always used to tease Mr. tubadave about one of the songs above because it was the #1 song on the Hot 100 on the day he was born. Which one is it? - #5 - Island Squirrel was the #1 song in the US on 11/13/75. As I've mentioned a zillion times before, four months earlier, the #1 was "Love Will Keep Us Together"...

JJC Points:

smiler gets 2 JJC points for his sphygmomanometer fascination and substituting genitals for nuts....

frank gets 3 JJC points for schooling me on Animaniacs. That was my favorite cartoon show from back in the day, and even before my sciurine fascination, Slappy Squirrel was my favorite character from the series! But once I moved on from college to Mecca, I had to quit watching the afternoon toons, and this sketch came from my first year at the Wal, 1998:

mini gets a supermax for the groupies, listening to Switching To Glide, and for showing her work yesterday!

starfish gets 3 JJC points for rankings, amateur videos (I once sat entranced for about 4 hours at Six Flags just watching the stream of past videos people made at their make-your-own music-video studio.... that was also the first time I ever heard No Doubt's "I'm Just a Squirrel"), and for noting the skunky songs he'd have gotten in the Friday game...

etaoin gets a JJC point for his red squirrel fetish....

elwood gets a supermax for his answer to #12. Flat out busted my ass up!!!

Jessie gets 3 JJC points for her naughty squirrel and fat bottomed squirrel pictures...

mike gets 3 JJC points for his good thoughts for Annie and for the shame of being born the day Purple People Eater was #1...

Fanny gets 3 JJC points for jilted acrobats, the LSWE's first ever Pussy Riot answer, and her fascination with the point is probably moot....

Esto gets 2 JJC points for The Beautiful South and for his dedication to Sprotsie...

Marley gets 3 JJC points since I couldn't accept his Krox, but it was worthy of full credit anyway....

For the first time in LSWE history, TBone is a no show. His 250 consecutive games streak has come to an end. The new leader is elwood, with 200-something, but I'm too shocked by this turn of events to dig up the exact number. I hope everything is OK with TBone....

I sent out a Facebook search party for TBone. He's not one of my friends so I can't see if he's had any recent activity over there.

Agreed on The Beautiful South--eh. I thought Pebbles was just one girl but then I saw the video for Mercedes Boy and it was 3 girls, only they tried to avoid showing one up close since she was rather unfortunate-looking. Video Killed the Radio Star indeed...

Huh.... that's news to me. I had no idea Pebbles was a group. Kind of like Jethro Tull and Pablo Cruise surprised me before....

Pebbles is not really a group but it's the girl Pebbles with other girls singing as well. And she apparently did backup for Paula Abdul which doesn't surprise me in the least since they're so similar!
