ANSWERS/POINTS LS C&W WEEKEND March 8-9

#1 Post by fantine33 » Sat Mar 08, 2008 12:32 pm

First, let me get this out of the way. NUGGETS RULE!!!!11 Great game and the crowd was insane. My ears were still ringing when I got up this morning (granted that was only a few hours later, ha!).

Now, let's get down to business, like ropin' and ridin' and yeehawin' all over the place. This one was originally posted on August 3, 2002.

1. All you gotta do is smile that smile
And there go all my defenses
But just leave it up to you and in a little while
You’re messing up my mind and filling up my senses

2. You always said that I have multiple personalities
I bounce around somewhere between my dreams and realities
But where’d you dig up the audacity to ask me
How we’ve all been doing since you broke our hearts

3. Her brother was on the sofa eating chocolate pie
Her mama was in the kitchen cutting chicken up to fry
Her daddy was in the back yard rolling up a garden hose
I was on the porch with Charlotte feeling love down to my toes

4. Would you go away to another land
Walk a thousand miles through the burning sand
Wipe the blood away from my dying hand
If I give myself to you

5. The judge he smiled as he picked up his pen
Ninety nine years in the Folsom Pen
Ninety nine years underneath that ground
I can’t forget the day I shot that bad bitch down

6. You might talk to my doctor
He comes by each day at two
Everyone I meet here in this place is pretty strange
If you hand me my crayons I’ll be glad to take your name

7. Call someone who’ll listen and might give a damn
Maybe one of your sordid affairs
But don’t you come ‘round here handing me none of your lines

8. This is down in the swampland anything goes
It’s alligator bait and the bars don’t close
It’s the real thing down in Louisiana

9. You don’t have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don’t have to call me Charley Pride
And you don’t have to call me Merle Haggard anymore
Even though you’re on my fightin’ side

10. Yeah the only kind of man that you ever wanted
Was one that you knew you’d never hold very long
Sittin’ there crying like I’m the first one to go

Bonus Instrumental: Following in the footsteps of Duane Eddy and Link Wray, this famous rock instrumental group had their first smash hit (it reached #2 in 1960) with this cover of a Chet Atkins number.

Bonus Bonus: The recording artist of one song in today’s game also wrote another one of today’s songs. Which artist and which two songs are they? (No half credit on this one, you need both songs.)

Looking at the answers posted so far, there's only one song here that I've ever actually heard, let alone know. Sorry. I got nothing.

Although it wasn't the perfect C&W song until Steve Goodman sat down & wrote this verse:

Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in the pickup truck
She got runned over by a damn'd ol' train!

Walk Don't Run - The Ventures. I read or heard on the radio somewhere (maybe as a kind of eulogy) that Chet Atkins was the person singly responsible for the "Nashville" sound, the polished sound and the kind of factory system that's responsible for 90%+ of what's on country music radio. How would you like someone to say in your eulogy that you singlehandedly ruined a great music genre?

Bonus Bonus: The recording artist of one song in today’s game also wrote another one of today’s songs. Which artist and which two songs are they? (No half credit on this one, you need both songs.)
I always read the bonuses before I read the lyrics, and when I read this I was expecting to find a Willie Nelson song and then "Crazy". Then when the first clue was a Dolly Parton song, I figured there'd be another one she wrote later on. She's such a great singer and a great songwriter. But I didnt' recognize anything as hers (not that I'm an authority).

I have David Allan Coe's version of "Would You Lay With Me" on his greatest hits CD (which I bought to get "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" before I knew what kind of lowlife he was). There's only a couple of good songs on it, and "Would You Lay With Me" sure ain't one of them. I never knew it was a hit or that it had been recorded by anyone else, but I'll assume someone else did. No matter, Coe recorded it too.

You say recording artist of one song and that he wrote another. I had to read this a couple of times before I realized you weren't saying he wrote both songs. Since, of course, Coe didn't write YNECMBMN - in Coe's version, he actually says during the song that it was written by Steve Goodman (of "City of New Orleans", "Dying Cub Fan's Last Request", "Go Cubs Go" and The Old Town School Of Folk Music being on Steve Goodman Avenue/Way/Boulevard fame). So the artist is Coe and those are the 2 songs.

After reading the comments by ToLiveIsToFly, I wanted to add a few more.
Spoiler
David Allan Coe blatantly plagiarized Townes Van Zandt's song "If I Needed You" when he wrote "Would You Lay (sic) With Me." This is confirmed in the Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Would_You_ ... _of_Stone)
They are so nearly identical that it never occurred to me that they are supposed to be two different songs.

Townes Van Zandt is held in very high regard around these parts by musicians and knowledgeable music fans. David Allan Coe - not so much. I saw TVZ perform several times. He was funny and talented, but drank himself to an early death.

It's hard to fathom how a douche bag like Coe got forever associated with such a great person as Steve Goodman. I talked to Steve Goodman three or four times after seeing him in concert and I was blown away by how nice he was to me. I was in awe of him as a writer and performer, but he was more interested in talking about me. If anyone ever gets a chance to see Steve Goodman's 1977 appearance on Austin City Limits, you'll see me on stage right next to him throughout the show. I should search for a copy of that. It was long before I owned a VCR, so I wasn't able to record it.

The story of the instrumental fits "Walk, Don't Run" by the Ventures. If so, I was unaware it was an Atkins original..

It's probably obvious from my screen name that I'm jealous of you for having seen TVZ play in concert. I've heard some radio interviews with him, and I saw the recent documentary "Be Here to Love Me". It was painful to watch. Having seen it, I'm almost surprised he survived as long as he did.

I'm a little embarrassed that I never noticed the similarity between "If I Needed You" and "Would You Lay With Me" before. I'm listening to the latter now and I can see it. I think the issue here is that one of these songs is very high among my all time favorites (It was the second song I ever danced to as a married man, and we danced to both Townes' and Lyle Lovett's versions that day), and the other is terrible.

Bonus: Walk Don't Run -- The Ventures

BonusBonus: I'll guess that Dolly Parton wrote Swinging, but I'm pretty sure that's not right. I would guess that Coe wrote something else, but I don't know the other songs well enough to guess.
