No Problems in Virginia

#1 Post by wintergreen48 » Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:35 pm

Things are going so well here in the Commonwealth that our legislators have nothing to do: they have a LOT of of time on their hands...

Watch What You Put on Trailer Hitches

By BOB LEWIS, AP
Tue Jan 15, 11:08 PM EST
RICHMOND, Va. — It's one thing to dangle fuzzy dice from a rear view mirror, but decorating a trailer hitch with a large pair of rubber testicles might be a bit much in Virginia.

State Del. Lionel Spruill introduced a bill Tuesday to ban displaying replicas of human genitalia on vehicles, calling it a safety issue because it could distract other drivers.

Under his measure, displaying the ornamentation on a motor vehicle would be a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $250.
He said the idea came from a constituent whose young daughter spotted an example of the trail hitch adornment and asked her father to explain it.

"'I didn't know what to tell her,'" Spruill said the constituent told him before Spruill vowed to stop such displays.

"I said, 'Sir, I'm going to be a laughingstock, but I'm going to do it,'" he said.

The Virginia General Assembly has some experience with offbeat bills. Three years ago, it drew widespread attention with an unsuccessful effort to outlaw baggy pants worn so low they expose underwear.

Spruill, 61, said the indignity of the "droopy drawers" debate wouldn't deter him. He said he won't hesitate to bring a set of $24.95 trailer testicles with him for a legislative show-and-tell.

"I'm going to do it," Spruill told a handful of reporters after Tuesday's House session adjourned. "I'm going to bring them out here and show them to you till they tell me to stop."

I had never heard of this. I wasn't clear on the concept, so I looked it up. Here are some photos:

I have a truck with a trailer hitch, but I have no desire to adorn it with bumper nuts. I guess I support the right of people to do so, but I doubt that I'd have much in common with most of them.

I admire you for showing so much restraint. ;)

I had to look up bumpernuts as well. I would never put them on my SUV, they are gross.

Then again, I am not really the vehicle decorating type. I have one Buttercup sticker on my SUV, because it helps me find which SUV is mine. (Plus, the girls named my car Buttercup.)

While I've seen several of the "we have rights" type protest posts about this, I'm glad to see it. My b-i-l has a set (well actually two sets, one real, one not) and hangs them from his truck wherever he goes. They are, just basically, tacky. He is currently in a fight with a woman in his office who is complaining about them - the proud redneck within is putting up quite a fight.

Other than the once or twice funny, 'Hey Roy, you're dragging your balls again" comments, I don't see much use for them.

In Oklahoma City, it is against the law to tattoo fish.

Them little biker fish are mean mo-fos.

Its foolish, pointless and impracticable to criminalize poor manners. Good people should just treat them as if they had just loudly farted and then acted proud of it.

Notice how The Powers That Want to Be claim its "a safety issue" sort of like that Seinfield episode where the girl wears her bra around town and Kramer has a wreck.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
