With 12 seconds left, Kevin decides to Ask The Expert. Today's expert is René Syler, author of Good-Enough Mother: The Perfectly Imperfect Book of Parenting.

René: I'm thinking carnivorous plant or flightless bird. Those are like opposite ends of the spectrum. Are you getting anything here, Kevin?

Kevin: I'm thinking flightless bird, because there was a type of prehistoric bird-like creature that had "archi" in its name. So that's what I'm thinking.

René: Oh, really? Okay. I think we should go with you because you're in the Hot Seat. I'm safely here at home.

Kevin: I hear ya! I know it's not pygmy horse. It's either the bird or the plant.

René: Go for it, Kevin, go for it! I'm right behind you.

Kevin: I'm going flightless bird, final answer.

Answer
D: Giant squid ( 7 )
Kevin falls to $5,000.

The longer this week went on, the more René sounded like a contestant, instead of an "expert".

But, that said, I've got to imagine that the question writers deliberately added flightless bird as a distractor, with Archaeopteryx in mind.

Not that anyone has seen a live Archaeopteryx, lately...

Archaeo (old) + pteryx (wing)

Archi (ruler or giant in this case) + teuthis (squid)

But that's probably beyond this expert.
No matter where you go, there you are.

This so called expert has been better than many of late but hard to blame her for this one either. This could have stumped the most dedicated of Animal Planet watchers.

Haven't had time to do my much loved (by me anyway) playalongs, but I would like to say that on my tiny screen I had to squint to read the clue, because Meredith's pronunciation, accurate though it may have been, wasn't helping much.

I thought the "archi" could mean "old" (so there, & so what) but knew Tethys, usually with a spelling like I just gave or close to it, is a sea god. "teuthis" gave me a little pause, but not much; had to be the squid.

I also could not get the phrase "Archaeopteryx, a flightless bird with hairy feathers" (dunno if its accurate either; its old old old, but not as old as Archaeopteryx) out of my head if ever I even wanted to. Phrase is either from Pogo or Peanuts.

This is Kevin Carter. Thank you for understanding. What you said in the words I bolded/underlined I have been wanting to say since the taping. I think they went out of their way to make sure my group didn't make any money. I have been beating myself over the head ever since taping for leaving with so little money (5K). I watched the show years ago and just knew that if I ever got a chance, I would run the table. Then I get there and screw up partly because of my nerves (burning a lifeline at 3K), the stack and the expert. The whole day was an exercise in frustration for me. An earlier contestant on my taping day got a Shakespeare question that I had studied that morning at 3 (as you could probably tell, I couldn't sleep a wink that night). A few weeks before going on I saw Jehan Shamsid Deen kill the stack and watched her make it all the way to the 500K question, which she didn't know (but I did!). I got really nervous and suspicious when they killed Phone A Friend, but I figured I would do OK with just a bit of luck and smarts. I didn't get the former, and I didn't demonstrate the latter. Case of missed opportunity. I don't want to sound like a bunch of sour grapes, because I loved being with all the other contestants and especially enjoyed meeting Meredith. :D

I read a story about some guy who had been on and decided one day just to take the train and show up at an open test in NYC. I passed the multiple choice test, the first interview and then the second on-camera interview. Then was on pins and needles for a couple of weeks until I got the call.

Do you remember the date of your audition? And when was your tape date? I know it was the tape day before Gordon's, but I don't know whether that was also the calendar day before Gordon's. --Bob
I believe it was, Bob. Carryover date for me was October 27th, though. Mirakech, who taped then, should be in next week's shows.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Thanks. Then all I need is Kevin's audition date and I can add him to the List. --Bob

Kevin had to have taped the same day as Lovi, so check her tape date.
