I just love puberty

#1 Post by lilclyde54 » Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:58 pm

Or at least I just love doing our annual puberty presentation for our 5th grade students. Somehow, I let our school nurse persuade me each year to take the 5th grade boys and enlighten them about puberty while she does the same with the 5th grade girls. The video we use utilizes cartoon figures but we still get quite the reaction from the students. Most of them are just embarrased but some of them think is the best opportunity they will have to embark on that stand-up comedian career that they have been considering. Luckily, the guy I have been doing these puberty presentations with for the last 7-8 years has a gun on his hip to keep order. (our Dare officer) We work pretty well as a team and have heard just about every off-the-wall question these 5th grade boys can come up with so today wasn't bad at all. In fact, we complimented this particular group of 5th graders for their maturity level and lack of silliness today.

Our district doesn't do the puberty lecture at all. The kids are supposed to get their info from 9th grade Health. Since Maddie took the Health Class during the summer, due to her impacted schedule, she didn't get the sex lecture. Luckily we had rabbits when she was younger, so she knows what going on...

I didn't think puberty was permitted in Orange County.

Takes me back to 1966, there was not much health in Health class, but I do remember the gym teacher who was responsible for the birds and bees portion (all 1/2 hour's worth) and whose ears turned bright red as he explained.

and I second bob's comment.

Several centuries ago, when I was in sixth grade, the boys got nothing, except an hour of recess, while the girls were shown a film and sworn to secrecy. Eighth grade got more info but I spent that year in Canada, where sex didn't exist.

She has the Net too. :)
