Half a bridge accomplishment

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Sat Feb 28, 2009 11:44 pm

Our District's Grand National Team qualifying is this weekend. We're playing Flight B again, just as we did last year. The first step was today, in which 6 teams competed in a double round robin for four spots in tomorrow's single-elimination knockout round.

We qualified as the top seed, which means we will get to choose our opponents for the semifinals. That choice will be easy. We will have the maximum possible carryover against one of the teams (that means we will start the match with a 16 IMP lead), whereas we would start against the other two teams behind by a few IMPs. So if we manage to win two more matches, we'll win the trip to Washington from our District.

Wish us luck! --Bob

The Baltimore Contingent is much closer, as are Brick and wintergreen. I can bring Erin! I'm sure she'd be on her best behavior and not disturb anyone's concentration.....

Close but no cigar

#12 Post by Bob78164 » Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:24 pm

We won our semifinal fairly comfortably. We started with a 16 IMP carryover (the maximum possible), and lost 4 IMPs in the first half, so we went into the second half of that match with a 12 IMP lead. We beat up on the other team rather badly in that half, so we won going away.

There was one team I was very concerned with, and they were playing the other semifinal. Their opponents also were fairly strong, but I was more confident that we could handle them. The strong team started that semifinal down by 16 IMPs, but had a huge first half to go up by 20 IMPs going into the second half. But they couldn't hold on, so we were able to avoid facing the team I was most concerned with.

Unfortunately, it was not to be our day. We started the match trailing (due to carryover) by 9 IMPs. It just never got any closer. We were down by 32 IMPs at the half and ended up losing by 42 IMPs. So no Washington for me this year. But 19.50 gold points isn't a bad consolation prize. --Bob
