Is there a way that this poll can be completely fair - meaning confirming that each poster gets just one vote - no MM and all that?

Then, this poll really means nothing, no matter how it ends up.

We don't have the ability to make public polls on this website?

Because that would help.

OTOH, didn't someone say we're all adults here? If the poll is so important, can't we trust that people won't bring their MMs in to "influence the vote"?

who moderates the moderators
Using a question as a poll statement is confusing, but let me offer an answer to the question.

Who moderates the moderators?

1. The moderator, himself. If the moderator is making a substantive change and following precedent, as Bob did in this instance, he clearly labels/explains every instance of using his moderation power. That leads to moderation from:

2. The BB who was moderated (the moderatee?) and all the rest of the Bored. We have standards here, which have developed by consensus or tradition or the outspoken lobbying of one or a handful of Bored members, but--however they happen--Bored standards do exist and are open to continuing debate and feedback. Should the moderator not publicize his moderation and the moderatee and other Bored members not notice the change, there is then moderation from:

3. The other moderators. As LB has said, every act of moderation is noted in a screen that all moderators can view. Any attempt at secret moderation can thus be made public, for exposure to feedback from the community. And if that is insufficient, there is moderation from:

4. Dave. As owner of the Bored, he ultimately has the power to change policy, to revoke someone's moderator status, or even to pull the plug. We do all have faith in his goodwill towards the Bored or we wouldn't be here, right?

None of this matters anyway because, as he has made clear in the past, Bob is going to do whatever Bob wants to do.

But I voted anyway.

And I'll tell you how I voted, in the interest of public disclosure. I voted "it depends" because, even though I have no problem with just putting a spoiler on something without changing what was written, I can imagine that somebody who is a "regular" poster might post something totally tasteless that should be edited or deleted.

Bob looking up members' IP addresses for no other reason than that he 'was curious' bothers me much more than something like this.

Unfair.

Bob has explained his actions and the philosophical basis for his actions. When did he ever say he would ignore all feedback from the Bored and become a tyrant?

I didn't say he doesn't explain it. I said he does what he wants to anyway. I also said I don't have a problem with putting a spoiler on something without changing text, especially if it's a relatively new or infrequent poster who might not realize how apeshit people get around here about being 'spoiled'.

Which implies that he refuses to listen to feedback from the Bored; i.e., that he will use his moderator powers as a tyrant. When did he ever say he would do that?

Or, if that is your judgment of what you think he'd do, what is it you see in Bob #'s character that leads you to that conclusion?

We all do what we want - it has nothing to do with character.

What we want in influenced by things around us.

I am pretty sure that bob## will not edit my posts.

(I did edit this one because I used 'due' when I should have used 'do')

Your implication is incorrect.

My conclusion has nothing to do with his character, just his actions. It's happened several times in the past and he's well aware of how some people feel about it. But he continues to do it. He explains himself and he responds to their posts but, to my knowledge, he's never said that he might have been wrong to do something or that, after knowing how people feel about it, he won't do it again. I might be wrong about this, but I think he usually defends his actions and "implies" that he was perfectly justified.

I'm not saying he wasn't justified and I'm not saying that he shouldn't do it. Just that there's no use in people getting all bent over trying to figure out how to make a fair "one person, one vote" public poll because it doesn't matter.

We all do what we want - it has nothing to due with character.

What we want in [Marley's blatant edit of pea's word: "is"?] influenced by things around us.
So if Bob is influenced by our discussion of this incident, then Fanny's statement, "None of this matters because, as he has made clear in the past, Bob is going to do whatever Bob wants to do," is incorrect, because it can influence what Bob wants to do.

Including, perhaps, deciding that being a moderator isn't worth the aggravation any more.

What Bob wants to do might change, but his doing what he wants will not. Whether or not everybody just votes once in a poll wont have much impact on that. In my opinion.

I'm not saying that the poll itself is useless, because it's interesting to see how people think rather than trying to figure their position from what they've posted and trying to count up sides.

I do think this will influence what bob##s wants to do in the future, just like it is influencing what I want to do.

If I thought none of this mattered, I would have kept my big mouth shut about it.

I do think the poll doesn't matter and will not matter. I think talking matters.

No, that was in the original. Mostly my edits are using it rather than is or than instead of that, etc. Or I'll realize that my syntax was really tortured and try to make something clearer.

I think my edit on this one was that I wasn't sure I was using i.e. correctly in referring to "regular" posters, so I reworded it.

I don't recall Bob talking about that. Perhaps Fanny can point us to the relevant thread?*

A couple days ago, beast was talking about how he can check if new posters are posting from the same IP address as veteran posters, which is how he decides to assign the "Merry Man" title to these new posters.

*Nevermind, I see beast has already posted the link. I did remember this month's discussion correctly, didn't I?

I'm not even going to bother voting with even one name, since the results will be called into question anyway, but...

What's the point of having moderators if they can't moderate? Besides cluttering up the top of the page with a thousand stickies, that is. We've had no more Anonymous Cowards since they could see IP addresses. I think that's a good thing, but maybe I'm the only one.

I'm also glad beast adds missing spoilers to the LS answers, since I don't use the quote function for that game because it makes the post longer and harder to put inside the spoiler. I copy the lyrics, then scroll down to the bottom to hit Post Reply and paste the lyrics into the spoiler tags. If there are posts with open answers, I'd see them and couldn't "unsee" them, which could influence my answers on the ones I hadn't figured out yet. Adding spoilers to unspoiled future show results is done all the time by the moderators on the TWoP boards, so it's common practice with most boards dealing with taped television shows. I wouldn't expect them to add spoilers to keep the people who hadn't watched their TIVO version happy, though. If it's aired, it's fair game. If it hasn't aired yet, then it's a spoiler.

Also, I think it's a plus that the mods have been able to fix pictures and remove the Dreaded Red X since some people aren't able to do it and others post infrequently and don't see the subsequent posts telling them the pictures aren't visible.

I've teased beast that he could change all my posts to Pig Latin or make them all say Bow Before the Almighty Beast, and he hasn't even done that yet. So I think there is a line between use and abuse that has not been crossed.

And I gave beast permission to take over all my identities if I were to disappear, so I could die and nobody would know the difference! So if he starts using my MM, you all now know it's with my permission and not just misuse of power.

This is all IMO, clearly. :P
