Let the Thawing Begin

#1 Post by silvercamaro » Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:21 pm

We've reached 32 degrees for the first time since the ice arrived. Let the thawing begin. I have a window of about three hours before the temperature will drop back below freezing. I'm hoping to drive to the grocery store.

If the streets are still scary, Annie and Lizbit will get hamburgers for dinner or whatever other kind of people food is in my freezer.

I'll v-v-vote for th-th-that. Anytime someone wants to usher in spring, I'm all for it.

Good luck and be careful. Missy and I haven't left the hospital since we got here. They let us stay in the sleep room (Missy did-I stayed in the room with Mother)

Looks like they have ice as far south as Nashville, so if we try to drive home tomorrow we may not make it. We are still in a quandry what to do.
Mother could last a couple more days.

Guess you sent the ice storm up here!

I live pretty close to the job (could walk home if the situation demanded it) -- but work is at the top of a big old hill, and home is at the bottom. It took almost an hour to get down the ice-covered hill, including the two hairpin turns -- mostly with the car in neutral and hugging the curb the whole way. Some of the Pitt students (on foot) told us one of the buses was stuck at the bottom and had slid across the road, but if that's true, it was gone by the time I got down there. When I was about 100 yards from the bottom the salt truck came up the other way. God bless those guys :D

Keith went in to work at 3:30AM, and he'll be there till 6 or 7 tonight, doing salting and snow removal on campus.

Annie and Lizbit will be thrilled to have people food!

Kay, I hope however this plays out is peaceful for everyone. Sounds like it is.

We'll probably have a sheet of ice over everything by tomorrow morning. It has started raining on top of the 5" of snow. The roads are down to pavement, but with the drains generally clogged with snow and ice, the rain water will remain on the surface until it freezes. Glad I stayed home today. Tomorrow's commute will be bad enough.

Be careful out there, Kay, and thoughts and prayers from here as well.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

irony alert!!!!
Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Former Vice President Al Gore told U.S. lawmakers that “bold action now” to combat global warming is needed to solve the nation’s climate, economic and national security challenges, and called for passage of President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan as a first step.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Kay, that last is heartbreaking.
However diminished someone's capacities may be from "what they once were", if they can enjoy aspects of life, I wish them life. If they're not conscious & aren't waking up, that doesn't apply, I guess. I wish for you & yours whatever is best.

Kay,

What ghost said.

I tried to say something and couldn't find what to say.

Thank you, ghost.

Yes -- what they said.

Be safe, everybody!

Leah just made it home -- not too much trouble as her route is pretty flat. Keith is still out in it. God bless him and all those folks out there trying to keep the streets and sidewalks passable. I just cooked a nice hot chicken dinner and it's waiting for him whenever he can drag himself home.
