Not a particular kind of music but a particular type of thing to do with your music.
I wish I could find a link to the place I got this idea from so I could give them proper credit.
I have a method to get your mp3 player / computer / whatever to do a quasi-random shuffle that’s way more enjoyable than straight random. You need something that can handle smart playlists. I realize it’s very geeky and takes a lot of time to set up on the front end, but I swear it’s worth it.
Rate all your music. Well, as much of it as you can get yourself to rate. I did my back-catalog quickly by assigning all songs by a particular artist a default rating and then looking for exceptions.
Pick an interval of time. I have about 10,000 songs on my ipod and probably listen to about 100 songs a day, and the number that works best for me is 2 weeks. Let’s call this interval X
Make a smart playlist of all your 5-star songs that haven’t been played in X
Make a smart playlist of all your 4-star songs that haven’t been played in 4X
Make a smart playlist of all your 3-star songs that haven’t been played in 12X
Make a smart playlist of all your 2-star songs that haven’t been played in 25X
Make a smart playlist of all your 1-star songs that haven’t been played in 50X
Make a smart playlist of all your 0-star (i.e. you haven’t rated them, not “they’re horrible") songs that haven’t been played in 25X
Make a smart playlist of all your songs that you got less than 3 months ago that haven’t been played at least 3X and aren’t in any of the other playlists
Make a playlist that pulls all the songs that are in any of the above playlists, and listen to that instead of true random.
You’ll hear everything, but you’ll hear the things you like better more often. And you’ll hear the new stuff you just haven’t listened to enough yet.
Another random music suggestion

Someone has too much time on their hands.
Besides, I don't think you have given a complete set of instructions out! I don't know how to do half of what you said.
PS I just saved a link about smart playlists though- I just got an iPod (my wife's old one actually, since I gave her an iTouch for Christmas. Actually, this iPod was a Christmas present to her, too!) and am interested in trying something like this.

Setting this up does take a bunch of time. I did it in the 15-day interval between Frankie's due date and his arrival (well, a day and a half of that was labor. I did it earlier than that).Jeemie wrote:ToLiveIsToFly wrote:Not a particular kind of music but a particular type of thing to do with your music.

Once it's set up, it doesn't take much time at all.
You're a reasonably bright guy. If you set up itunes, which you're going to have to do anyway, you'll be able to figure this out pretty easily if you want to.
