Talk to Your Plants...It Works!

#1 Post by o-man » Sun Oct 26, 2008 3:29 pm

I'm no botanist, but for Mother's Day this year I planted my s.o. a bird of paradise on the upstairs patio. Birds of paradise are a dime a dozen here in La-La Land, but my s.o. had been after me to get one for her, so I did. The mope at the nursery said in disjointed English, "Full sun, regular water, it will bloom." I was concerned, because my s.o. had told me it could take a few years. She should know; she's a bona fide native Angeleno!

Well, for the last couple of months I had been noticing something growing straight and yellow, then red, then orange among the green spreading fronds. Yesterday, my s.o. was sitting out on the patio and I brought this little vertical splash of color to her attention. I actually petted it and coaxed it along and said something like, "I hope you bloom soon. Come out!"

Damn if this morning when reaching for the hose I didn't notice this little delight of nature. Thank goodness for small favors!

I think there's another blooming bird trying to soar on the other side of the planter. Godspeed!

I have a friend who talks to her plants all the time.
Maybe I should try that.

I have two gorgeous, very large Kimberly Queen ferns out by the pool
that I would love to somehow make it through the winter. I don't really have a place
to put them so I'm afraid they will have to be replaced next spring. :(

One of my aunts swears by this. She insists that my uncle killed one of the plants in the kitchen by cussing at it every morning because it got in his way.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.
