Trivia Q's for Today

#1 Post by christie1111 » Wed Oct 22, 2008 8:36 am

They didn't say what the prize was for today....

1. One tree makes ????? reams of copy paper for 8,333.3 sheets?
2. List 3 Connecticut Recycling centers
3. One quart of oil can contaminate ????? gallons of water, effectively eliminating that much water from our water supply?

I think the person writing these Qs never wrote for the Bored.

Is Q1 asking how many reams are in 8333.3 sheets of paper?

1 Yes, divide by 500
2 How the heck would I know?!
3 250,000!

What are the rules for your contest? Is Googling allowed?

1. There are three definitions for "ream" of paper. Short ream is 480 sheets. Long ream in 500 sheets. Printer's ream is 512. So somewhere around 16 to 17 reams gets you 8,333.3 sheets of paper. The fraction of sheets is odd.

2. Very strange question. I don't know if "Recycling Center" has a specific meaning or if they just want places you can go to recycle material.

3. Googling says 250,000 gallons of water. That would be 0.000128 ounces of oil per gallon. I wonder why 0.000127 ounces/gal is not considered contaminated but that extra 0.000001 pushed it over the edge.

Nevermind the definitions for a ream. What's the standard size definition for a tree? :?

I have just been giving a citation and figuring if I have a documented answer, I am okay. On Monday they asked about 'making' pasta. So I gave them a site that said you need 1 quart to boil 2 oz. of pasta. They meant manufacture and gave the answer 36 gallons or something really big. But I was allowed to win since I answered the question as written.

You guys would tear this person up on a QoD written as badly as these are.

Without looking it up, I'll bet that the EPA limit of oil in water is 4 ppm. That's what my math conversions tell me with the above information.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Duh. 8,333.3 sheets of paper.

For example, 12,843 sheets of paper would be 1.54116616 trees.

1 sheet of paper would be 0.00012000048 trees.

But someday we'll be on the metric tree system and 10,000 sheets of paper will be one metric tree and 500 sheets of paper will be 5 centitrees rather than a ream.
No matter where you go, there you are.

No tree metrification! Then 1000 weeping trees would be a kilowillow.

gs, now waiting for the toppers :D

I believe there are 500 sheets in a ream, so approx. a little more than 16.5? I know there is a recycling center in Milford. I will guess that New Haven and Hartford also have recycling centers? I know that one qt. of oil poured into a pond can cause a slick of approx. 2 acres, so I will guess 40,000 gallons of water?
