RIP Eileen Herlie

#1 Post by VAdame » Thu Oct 09, 2008 7:16 pm

Eileen Herlie, All My Children's beloved Myrtle Fargate, has died at the age of 90.

She also played Queen Gertrude to Lawrence Olivier's Hamlet -- despite being 13 years younger than her on-screen son!

RIP -- I hope Pine Valley does a commemorative show!

I watched AMC pretty regularly from about 5th grade until 1998.

I hope so too! She was on the show for as long as I can remember.

She also did a few Broadway musicals. Her duets with Jackie Gleason in Take Me Along were some of my favorite numbers of all time. What a great lady.

When I was a kid, my friends and I would sit and listen to Broadway cast albums. I also have a soft spot for Take Me Along.

And what a cast -- Jackie Gleason, Eileen Herlie, Robert Morse, Walter Pidgeon, Una Merkel.

As a matter of fact, I was listening to it in the car today.

She also introduced the lovely song "Once Upon a Time" along with Ray Bolger in a lesser musical, All American.

I remember when she first came on All My Children back in the 1970s. I didn't even know who she was until I saw the credits, but the minute I saw her, I said, "That actress has presence." She created a whole character in a few words. It was only supposed to be a temporary role, but she was so popular, audiences demanded that she come back.

I didn't realize that she introduced Once Upon a Time.

A lovely song.
