Re: Baseball stuff
I'm not a big follower of baseball, but in my youth the All-star break occurred right around July 4. When did it get moved to later in the month? Was there a reason?

Re: Baseball stuff
The All-Star Game is played on a Tuesday, and it's usually determined by when the 4th of July occurs. If the 4th of July falls early in the week, they'll play the All Star game on the next Tuesday. If it falls later in the week, like this year, they'll wait one more week. There have been some exceptions. Re: Baseball stuff
During the couple of decades I followed baseball (late 80's - early 10's), it was always the second Tuesday of July (one of the reasons I rarely got to go to a game on my birthday). I think the trend to occasionally push it to the third Tuesday is relatively new, and a product of them switching up the starting and ending dates of the regular season schedule in recent years...silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 8:56 amThe All-Star Game is played on a Tuesday, and it's usually determined by when the 4th of July occurs. Edit: It was always the second Tuesday from 1987-2002, with the odd exception of 1998 when it was the FIRST Tuesday. Interesting...

For a while I thought this year's Rockies were a contender to challenge this mark, but they have proven inept at displaying historical levels of ineptitude. --Bob

Re: Baseball stuff
There was an interesting trade in MLB yesterday. The Baltimore Orioles traded relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez to the Toronto Blue Jays. That's not the interesting part. The trade occurred between games of a doubleheader in Baltimore between the two teams. (The trading deadline is tomorrow afternoon.) When the trade was finalized, Toronto representatives escorted Dominguez through the corridors of Camden Yards to the dressing room of his new team. He changed uniforms and pitched a scoreless inning for Toronto in the second game of the doubleheader. (Toronto lost both games.) Last year, Dominguez was traded from the Phillies to the Orioles in a similar trade just before the deadline.

Reminds me of the story of Joel Youngblood in the 80's getting a hit for the Mets in Chicago, getting trade mid-game to Montreal jumping on a plane and getting a hit for the Expos in Philadelphia that night.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 9:16 amThere was an interesting trade in MLB yesterday. That woulda coulda shoulda been Antonio Senzatela's 15th loss of the season, which (barring injury or demotion) would have made him a near lock to become the first 20 loss pitcher in 22 years. Jen Pawol set to become 1st woman to umpire MLB game Saturday
Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball when she works games this weekend between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
Pawol will work the bases in Saturday's doubleheader at Truist Park and the plate Sunday, MLB said Wednesday.
"This historic accomplishment in baseball is a reflection of Jen's hard work, dedication and love of the game," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "She has earned this opportunity, and we are proud of the strong example she has set, particularly for all the women and young girls who aspire to roles on the field."
Pawol, a 48-year-old from New Jersey, worked spring training games in 2024 and this year. She will become the fifth umpire to debut this season
