B-53 appears to be Arrowsmith, for sure.

B-37 appears to be Lost Weekend, although it's less conclusive

B-19 is definitely Bob and Carol etc.

I cannot find a set of twin brother actors that fit B-25.

This seems to me to indicate it can't be based on an anagram of the movie title in list B as well as a substring of the movies title (unless it is something like Aliens as opposed to Alien) if the two titles are different but either can work. If it is not a name connection then the two movies that would both work must have something else in common (cast member, director, producer, writer, etc.) so that either could work.

Frank, is it fair to ask if the wrong titled answer has been corrected or is it still wrong?
It's still wrong, and it still doesn't matter.

Frank said, "Only one of the movies with alternates doesn't include the correct answer." That was before Mr K's Lost Weekend comment. I know Milland did research there but wasn't sure about the actual filming.

I looked up Sweeney Todd and that's it.

SO, we just need this one ....

B-1. Two thousand actual soldiers were paid $3.50 apiece to shave their heads for their appearance as extras in this Oscar-winning film.

Can this be THE LAST EMPEROR?

I'm thinking of Oscar-winning pictures that had scope and might have lots of bald guys.

It is - I just checked the trivia section in IMDB and that tidbit is listed there.

Yup, everything on here is correct, except for the one movie where it doesn't matter for the purposes of this puzzle.

Two very significant things have been said. Once the Tangredi is unlocked, the pairs will start coming fast.

Raoul Walsh, Birth of a Nation, Lillian Gish, Way Down East.

Can it be the top-billed female in each cast? Is that the hook?

Jungle Book = Phil Harris with Verna Felton, the top-billed female in Dumbo?

That CAN"T be it -- because we get movies like the Prince and the Pauper with virtually NO women in the cast. Although Mary Field from that movie WAS the lovesick Miss Totten to Gary Cooper's Potts in Ball of Fire (the female star of which is the female star of B-4).

We just got back from Regina's funeral, so I haven't given it much thought. AND, in a few minutes, I am off to a delayed-by-intestinal-yukkies Christmas gift-giving at my goddaughter's house.

SO, I am not back here until 10 p.m.-ish.

Since Frank said the pairs will come quickly once the Tangredi is discovered, I hope that's not too late. :D

Your post about Raoul Walsh is one of the two most important contributions so far.

So does that mean we're going back to Gloria Swanson playing a prostitute?

How about just connecting actors to films that feature prostitutes, whether or not the actor/actress playing the prostitute appeared in any of the List B movies?

A-11. RAOUL WALSH hooks up with a prostitute in "Sadie Thompson", which starred Lionel Barrymore, who was in B-51. SINCE YOU WENT AWAY.

Here is what I think we can safely eliminate:

Connecting a movie in B to an actor in a with the actor's last name being used in the link since we have two actors with the same last name: e.g. Ed Harris and Phil Harris.
Same holds for first names as well, e.g. two John's.

List B has at least 2 entries by the same director - Hitchcock so the director of the B list can't be the key to the Tangredi.

There are a number of people in list A that do appear in list B - but I'm sure that isn't the Tangredi as well.

I still keep going back to a female actor who appears in list B matching up with an actor in list B. There seems to be a lot of connections there - either in real life or working together in a movie.

For example the first type of match:
B-27 - Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn links with A-32 Cary Grant - via Charade
for the second type
B-19 B&C&T&A stars Dyan Cannon who was married in real life to A-32 Cary Grant
or
Hello, Dolly - Barbra Streisand married to Elliot Gould

Of Raoul Walsh's spouse, I believe only 1 was an actress - Miriam Cooper - who stop making films in the mid-1920's and I don't think any of her films are in list B - then that would rule out that connection. So I'm left with a female star from B appearing with an actor from A in some other movie - but I'm not sure that will work for everyone.

Here are some that do work:
Psycho - Janet Leigh - That Forsyte Woman - Errol Flynn or Touch Of Evil with Orson Welles
Sweeney Todd - Helena Bonham Carter - Great Expectations with Ralph Fiennes
Double Indemnity - Barbara Stanwick - Meet John Doe - Gary Cooper
The China Syndrome - Jane Fonda - Klute - Donald Sutherland
Labyrinth - Jennifer Connely - A Beautiful Mind - Russell Crowe
Alien - Sigourny Weaver - The Year of Living Dangerously - Mel Gibson
Babes In Arms - Judy Garland - The Clock - Robert Walker
and more...

But there are others that I can't figure out and this Tangredi just seems too general and the list of actors have such a large number of credits - so it is not surprising that we can find these connections also I proposed this before and I would have thought that Frank would have mentioned that the correct Tangredi had been proposed.

In other words - I've got nothing...

Why would you need the prostitute angle - Actor in A costars with an actor X and actor X appears in B would be sufficient.

It seems like Billy Connolly (A-37) should go with B-28 Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Judi Dench), since Mrs. Brown must be his most memorable film. Maybe it's any kind of extra-marital romantic (possibly) relationship, not just prostitute - client?

How about Actor from List A portrays a character based on a real person whose character is in a romantic relationship with someone from a movie in List B?

That would make the Ben Whishaw-Abby Cornish match I speculated on earlier valid.

And Smiler's speculation about Billy Connolly and Judi Dench.

I don't know about all of frogman's matches, but it would at least fit the Russell Crowe-Jennifer Connelly one.

And the Mel Gibson Sigourney Weaver one.

Those two things together might be limiting enough to make the puzzle manageable, but it will take someone with more movie knowledge than I to support or disprove it.

To put those in the usual form, just in case this works:

A-21 BEN WHISHAW(Bright Star) pairs with B-35 SUCKER PUNCH (Abby Cornish)
A-37 BILLY CONNOLLY(Mrs. Brown) pairs with B-28 BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (Judi Dench)
A-26 RUSSELL CROWE(A Beautiful Mind) pairs with B-30 LABYRINTH (Jennifer Connelly)
A-14 MEL GIBSON(The Year of Living Dangerously) pairs with B-43 ALIEN (Sigourney Weaver)

A-31. TOM DRAKE (Richard Rodgers in Words and Music) = B-2. PSYCHO (Janet Leigh)

I don't see a Marcia Gay Harden movie to go with Ed Harris' Pollock or a Jessica Lange movie to go with his Charlie Dick in Sweet Dreams.

ALSO looking for a Diane Keaton movie to go with Warren Beatty's John Reed.

And I'm not sure it takes care of Walter Catlett, Skippy, Dumbo or Raoul Walsh.

His writer, Ernie, in Continental Divide was inspired by Mike Royko.

We'd need a Blair Brown movie to complete the pairing.

A-22. ROBERT STACK guy in Written on the Wind) = LAUREN BACALL (B-21. WRITTEN ON THE WIND)

I'm running into a problem --

I am finding historic/inspired by ...in List A but I am not finding a movie with the corresponding actress.

A-15. JOEL MCCREA = Great Moment. Looking for a Betty Field movie
A-32. CARY GRANT = Toast of New York. Francis Farmer
A-34. CLIFTON WEBB = Sousa / Frank Galbraith = Ruth Hussey oMyrna Loy

I agree, close but no cigar maybe. The Walsh thing and the lack of a Blair Brown movie pretty much clinched it for me.

I don't know if we're close to the correct solution, or if this is just one of those red herrings that come up when you have this many data points to choose from.

And just as I came up with this:

A-34. CLIFTON WEBB (Frank Gailbraith in Cheaper by the Dozen) = Myrna Loy (B-53. ARROWSMITH)

We have to be close because Frank said there are correct matches.

Could it be the name - going back to Hooker as a military name, not a profession? And NOT a romantic interest, just a co-star.

For example:

Rex Harrison plays Dr. DOOLITTLE (as in Jimmy). His co-star in the movie where he plays Doolittle is Samantha Eggar (The Collector).

Russell Crowe = John (francis) NASH. Co-star in the movie as Nash is Jennifer Connolly, as we discussed.

Of course it still doesn't help with Raoul Walsh, because the only General Booth I can think of is the Salvation Army guy.

This post alone contains enough useful information to solve the Tangredi.

The Tangredi is, apparently, hard to see, but it can be stated quite simply in very few words. Once stated, you will know instantly what you have to look for in the case of every actor. And, once you see it, you will instantly understand its relationship to the game title.

Proposed Tangredi:
Actor A plays a character in a film whose character name has a double O - they costar in the aforementioned film with an actor who is in a film in list B?

Nevermind - I can't find a Ronald Reagan role that fits.

I thought of it seeing Booth, Doolittle and then noticed the Dumbo connection with
A-36 - Phil Harris - Baloo (In the Jungle Book) costars Verna Felton who is in 'Dumbo'
and Hooker has a double 'o' as well - and jumped to an incorrect conclusion
