Another day(well later in the same day anyway)-another 9 to 10 Billion dollar project in the energy sector.

More great high-paying, cutting-edge scientific jobs in the Bakken. Too bad the Red-State rubes in the oil industry can't handle mainstream science or the Bakken/Eagle Ford etc-might really amount to something. http://www.amazon.com/The-Republican-Br ... y_b_text_y

Don't write us off yet. According to this ranking of the most adaptable state economies, California is third in the nation, trailing only Massachusetts and Delaware. --Bob

I don't totally write off California. It has a lot of inherent attributes(climate etc) and economic activity. Plus, obviously some of it is me giving you the needle.

However, with the California regulatory situation, being what it is-when even Green Energy companies find it difficult to do business there-"Adaptable" is probably not a word that I would apply to California.

Good article on the Three Forks(Torquay) which underlies the Bakken. Not that this is really new info-but apparently some big news just came out of Canada lately on the Torquay.

My god, Obama's economy would be truly pathetic without the shale oil and gas revolution that fell into his lap.

If Texas is doing so well why is the Texas Republican Party calling for the minimum wage to be lowered?

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Seriously, that is the best you have?

Well, its a good thing then that we have been blessed with rapid growth in an industry that pays into the 6 figures for blue-collar jobs.

What happens to wages in a free market. Walmart is paying above $17 an hour in Williston.

Have you checked the prices at that Walmart?

So that's my point, if Texas as doing well why would there be a demand to lower wages?

If you have to tell yourself that Texas is not doing well economically-so be it-whatever you have tell yourself to sleep at night- I guess.

The contentions of this thread are that:

1) The shale gas and oil revolutions (that fell into the Obama Administration's lap) with its high-paying jobs nation-wide are pulling the load in providing growth in the national economy. Essentially, the wheels would have fallen off Obama's economy without this unforeseen and unappreciated boon.

2) To point out the tremendous amount of STEM in what is basically a "Red-State" mindset industry. Not just related to evolution and Geology-although, it starts there. It has been an ongoing meme on this Bored and its predecessors that the "Red-State" mindset can't handle science.

This is getting a little old now-but I suspect that it still largely stands.

I suspect that the average STEM grad of the School of Mines has more of a Red-State mindset than your typical college graduate.

You're totally missing my point. I'm not saying that Texas big businesses are not doing well, I'm saying that Texas employees are not.

The problem with the "Red-State" mindset is that those that have it believe instead of relying on facts.

The White House has acknowledged the importance of the oil and gas industry:

Safe and Responsible Oil and Gas Production as Part of President Obama’s All-of-the-Above Energy Strategy

Spock would call this half-hearted lip service, and would prefer the White House to agree with him that the oil and gas industry is keeping the economy afloat, but hey, from the Obama administration, it's a lot.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. economy shrank by a 2.9% annual pace in the first quarter instead of 1% as previously reported,

I don't feel like looking it up right now-but the drop-off in energy production on federal lands vs the increased production on private lands has been widely reported throughout relevant circles. This ostensibly shows where the Obama Admin's action is. Remember the Shale boom is largely occurring on private lands.

http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html ... 6sp2PldVqW

Manhattan institute had a February 2014 paper on:

WHERE THE JOBS ARE:

Small Businesses Unleash Energy Employment Boom

Some pull quotes that are similar to what I have been saying.

>>>Overall U.S. employment has yet to return to its prerecession level(As of February), but the number of oil & gas jobs has grown 40 percent since then.<<<<

>>>The shale oil & gas revolution has been the nation’s biggest single creator of solid, middle-class jobs—throughout the economy, from construction to services to information technology.<<<<

Once again, given the 2.9% first quarter decline-imagine where we would be without the Shale oil and gas revolution.

>>>In recent years, America’s oil & gas boom has added $300–$400 billion annually to the economy—without this contribution, GDP growth would have been negative and the nation would have continued to be in recession.>>>

I will repost this from an earlier thread. This is hard frackin' data for you.

http://www.aei-ideas.org/2014/05/the-ca ... al-prices/

It costs twice as much to rent a uhaul from California to Texas as it does from Texas to California.

Now we know that welfare people are not the predominant demographic of those moving from CA to Texas. The vast majority of them are likely employees. This alone suggests that Texas employees are doing fine. At the very least it suggests that Texas is better for employees than California is.

EMPLOYEES are voting with their feet (and their uhaul dollars)
