Status report:

Friday was a really good day. She was awake almost the entire day, laughing and joking with the many friends who came by to see her, and as Wendy told one friend, when she left that night, Sherry was shaving her legs, putting on lotion, and otherwise going through her regular routine.

Saturday was much different. She slept most of the day, and Wendy said if she hadn't had certain friends come by, she might have slept the entire day. They told her when she was admitted that sometimes people go home from hospice, at least for a while. That was not to give her false hope, but to tell her how things are, and it's true: I"ve seen people go home from hospice, although they're often back within a matter of weeks. But last night they had to catheterize her, which is not a good sign.

We'll all go see her again today, and Wendy will spend most of the day there.

Thanks for all your concern, and hugs, and vibage. She and Wendy are worth it, and appreciate it.

Sherry continues to confound the docs. 11 years ago, although they didn't tell her this at the time (Wendy only found this out a couple of years ago), her doctors thought she would never make it past five years. Last year in July, Wendy was told that it would be "very surprising" if her mom was still alive a year from then.

Flash forward to this week. Sherry is improving so much they're talking about sending her home. She passed one big hurdle yesterday, when they were able to take her off IV meds and give her Dilaudid pills. Today's hurdle was removing the catheter -- I haven't heard about that one yet. In any case, the hospice center says they never send a patient home on a Friday, because of the odds for possible complications and the lack of employees there on weekends. So, best case scenario, she'll be sent home Monday, and she'll be visited every day by a home hospice nurse, and she will have enough help with other stuff that she will be allowed to stay home, hopefully for a long time.

She really looks good, especially when you consider she's a Stage IV cancer patient who has beaten her doctors at every turn.
