She sold the family homestead a few years back and finally got rid of the phonebooks she had saved since they moved in in 1967. She has started saving the ones in Florida. When Sting told her she could throw them away, she said she doesn't because sometimes you can't find number in the new book and they will be in the old book.

I'm like "Does the old number work?"

Usually not, she says.
Does she recognize herself when she sees those hoarding shows or is she all "I have a reason to keep stuff but now, those people, they've got a problem!
She is those people.

It gives me some stress to stay in her home. She does try to move everything into her bedroom or the den and stuff just keeps spilling over.

I am not even close to a pack rat, but I live with a bunch of them. The worst part is when my sturdy oldest son goes to help the Uber-packrat m-i-l clean out a path to her bedroom, and he comes home with a bunch of her discarded "treasures". My favorite was the collection of old maps of this city from before I was born. Nostalgic, yes. Remotely useful, Hell to the NO!

Half the time I do a purge when I'm alone and nobody ever realizes shit is missing....
Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is collected and used.

Oooooh, I would hate to have to commit matricide if someone did that to all my junk......

It may take me a few years to realize stuff was missing, but I'd be looking for blood when I found out..... :P

Hey, old maps are cool! 8)

And some kids can't even read maps. Count your blessings.

[This gratuitous post should disrupt the unfortunate juxtaposition noted by wintergreen, at least until someone posts in that thread.]

Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, um, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future."

Sometimes I loathe the internet. There are some things I think you should be able to live down.

At least Miss South Carolina would scritch me!

Well, she would have scritched me if she could have found where I lived on the map.....
Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.
