Third place -- I'm not at all uphappy with that.

I made two bad mistakes, or we probably would have won because I had studied up on my Egyptian deities, as I mentioned earlier.

I let my teammate read scherzando off my notepad, which she read as scherzondo. AARGH! One miss, and we buy back in.

Then I spelled Tutankhamen the same way the OED does, which is what they were requiring, but I forgot to say "capital T," and the team which went on to win called me on it.

Everybody in the audience thought it was BS, but rules is rules. So onward!

Thanks to all for the advice and good wishes.

In the kids' bee they are not required to say that a letter is capitalized.

Thanks, Skoop!

It was announced in no uncertain terms at the start of the third round -- capitals announcements required. I was stuck, even though the audience was on my side. It was sorta like a call that goes for the Raiders at Mile High.

Congratulations on your third place!

I know you learned from the mistakes, so they are a good thing.

Good Luck. We just finished our district spelling bee. I am proud to say that 3 of my fifth grade students took 3 of the 8 spots that advance on to the county-wide bee. There were 8 elementary schools competing in our district bee.
I felt the change

Time meant nothing and never would again

It's still a crappy rule. I am duly outraged. I want to run over the foot of the person who called you on it. No one disses my pal Sprots like that. LEMME AT 'EM! LEMME AT 'EM!!! I'll teach 'em how to spell P-A-I-N!! and A-G-O-N-Y!!! And just for giggles, K-U-M-Q-U-A-T!!!!!

GRRRRRRRR. :x :x :x :x :x

I'm pretty impressive when I get all worked up into a lather like that, aren't I?

Congrats on a fine finish.

I have to take the side of the judges on the "capitalization", as my kids are told that they get a word wrong if they do not say "Capital O-b-a-m-a" when practicing for a test, for example.

The Boy has his first all -school spelling bee next month. He may be the lone representative for his grade. The list of words that they use somehow got lost at home, and his teacher has not secured a new list. We have decided that he should just see how many words he knows without studying.
