1) Surrender by ELO is a different song, not a cover.

2) No one could possibly "cover" "Somebody's Baby" by Phantom Planet because their song is a cover of Jackson Browne.

Red Bull wrote:It was really nice of LB to allow me to host a Lyrically Speaking game for him, especially considering the fact that I'm actually one of Rexer's Merry Men! You see, the other day me and a couple other MM's were shooting the bull down at the Local 1326 Hall, and we were wondering why only LB's Merry Men seemed to get to host the Bored games. It didn't seem fair that just because our masters were too busy or lazy to host Bored games of their own that we should have to sit on the sidelines while LB's alter egos got all the fame, fortune and chicks. I mean, what does Billy Mays and Obscenely Rich Bastard have that I don't have? So I paid a little visit to LB to find out what the deal was. I told him that he should really allow me to host one of his LS games for him, and if he didn't, I'd use my horns to skewer his family jewels. He was surprisingly accomodating and said he'd be glad to give me a hosting gig! But then he asked to see the game I had written for him. Um...... I thought all I had to do was sit there and look pretty while I read off a carefully written and witty introduction for a game someone else wrote. Nobody said there was any real work involved in this hosting business! I turned around and slowly slunk away while my eyes started getting misty. LB must've taken pity on me because he called me back and told me I could stand in for him on one of his games. Oh boy, what a nice guy! Heck, LB was even kind enough to invite me with him to Ponderosa for lunch tomorrow! I can't wait!

So I couldn't get one of the primo Wacky Wednesday slots, but LB said all I had to do was introduce this Theme Thursday game for him. He says today's game is based on a theme he first used back in the October 2002 LS which nobody was able to crack then, so he's going to try it again this time under a different set of circumstances.

This game will not give you wings, but it will give you 1 point for each correct title, 1 point for each correct artist, and 3 points for identifying the theme.....

OMG, I think I have the theme! I was just driving down the street and it hit me. Very clever, lb.

Too late, of course, so instead of just taking a stab I need to check out something first to make sure I'm right.
Spoiler
If I am, I'm sure lb laughed when he read my answer because I had it right there, I just didn't follow through.

Also, if I'm right, it will be interesting to see if anybody else gets it.

Well, you were at a distinct disadvantage in this game anyway having just come back to the Bored after being gone so long. I can't remember your posting status in '02 to know what kind of a shot you would have had at that one, but I think the original game was a much harder theme to pull than this one....

This game also adds further evidence to the notion that my mind works quite differently from others, which is why themes I think are easy are ones that turn into stumpers, and themes I think will be hard are solved rather easily....

My mind very strongly works with association. I can't go out of the house for even an hour without seeing something that will make me think of something from this Bored (Or baseball, or something from work, or anything else that's a major part of my life. I still think of donsdons everytime I see a reference to Blazing Saddles, and I doubt anyone else but maybe tubadave would even remember the incident I'm talking about which happened on the Bored over 8 years ago....

At least my fear I had that some people might guess at the theme before they even played the game wasn't justified.....

Well, after all those times we posted the same thing at the same time in chat, I figured it was already a given that our brains are both on the same wavelength....

A really bizarre and warped wavelength, but the same nonetheless....

The only thing I can think of is that "Somebody's Baby" was on the soundtrack for "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Disco Duck" was featured in "Saturday Night Fever," "Pink Cadillac" was the name of a movie with Eastwood and Bernadette Peters, "Thank You for Bein' a Friend" was the theme song for "The Golden Girls," and "Surrender" was featured in a couple of movies, so maybe the others were too.

Spoiler
1. Evil Woman - ELO. Growing up, I thought this was called "Medieval Woman".
2. 1. I Am The Walrus - Beatles. Here's a little clue for you all. The Walrus was Paul.
3. Nope
4. Lawyers In Love - Jackson Browne. OK, so my new obsession is ranking every single song that hit the Hot 100 that I know, by year, starting in 1955. I just finished 1983. This song came in #182 for that year. And dead last.
5. Breakout - Swing Out Sister. When I get to 1987, this song will probably be closer to the top than the bottom.
6. Nope
7. Thank You For Being A Friend - Andrew Gold
8. 100 Years - Five For Fighting
9. Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins. By comparison, I've ranked 131 songs for 1984 so far. This one is currently at #11.
10. Somebody's Baby - Jackson Browne. Hmmm.... Two Jackson Browne songs and I still have no clue on the theme.
11. Pink Cadillac - the hit was by Natalie Cole but it was written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen
12. Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
13. Nope
14. Nope

Theme - I don't see a year theme or a chart theme. I see two Jackson Browne songs but no other doubles. I see a couple of songs associated with TV shows (#7) and movies (#10), but not more than that. I see songs that were written by the singer and others that were written by others. I see some animals and some people and, in the end, I have nothin'!

Theme? Time for some free association, I think. We've got several animals: duck, walrus, dog, maybe wolf; a walrus has tusks, and Fleetwood Mac did a song called Tusk, and a Fleetwood is a kind of Cadillac, and Natalie Cole was Somebody's Baby, as long as Somebody is Nat King Cole. I wanted to try to turn these into popular TV shows or movies, but it wouldn't work. There are some colors, too, but not enough to make them work. I've been staring at this for about 40 minutes now, so I"m gonna give up. I'll say they're all songs from good TV commercials, since you've got the walrus there for the pizza commercial.

Spoiler
1. Evil Woman - Electric Light Orchestra
2. I am the Walrus - The Beatles
4. ? - Jackson Browne (I can't come up with the song)

Theme: After the first 2, I was thinking "supergroups" because Jeff Lynne (ELO) and George Harrison were in The Traveling Wilbury's. That thought went nowhere and left me without a theme.

11. Well now way back in the Bible
Temptations always come along
There's always somebody tempting
Somebody into doing something they know is wrong
Pink Cadillac - Bruce Springsteen or Natalie Cole

Theme? - The theme can be found in the following two threads:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11832
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11875

Each song is somehow related to each of the 14 questions contained in our very own madamemeisha's WWTBAM stack! Fanny was the only one to figure out the theme on her own, but even that was only after she had answered... and the two of us had fun torturing Clem in chat last night until he was finally able to come up with it. I was really hoping Meisha herself would play this game to see if she'd recognize the theme, but alas.....

The game I referred to in October 2002 was one I did based on Bixby's stack from 5 months prior, and true to form, both games wound up being theme shutouts...

Thanks again to Rexer for letting me borrow his Red Bull MM for this game, which served as a bit of a nudge in the right direction, though apparently, not for most people....

JJC Points:

In honor of the theme, everyone who answered Big Mama Thornton for Hound Dog gets a JJC point. This list includes (Assuming I didn't leave anyone out) melly, ghost, Fanny, and mrkelley

Mini got a JJC point for saying she dated someone who looked like Robin Zander of Cheap Trick. If she would have said Bun E. Carlos, I'd have given her 3.....

Pea was extra funny today and got 3 JJC points. The Tocque and the Tocquettes answer itself was almost good enough for the max...

Fanny gets an extra JJC point belatedly being the only one to come up with the theme, and for her brilliant handling of Clem's torture last night...

Clem got the 3 JJC max again despite the fact that he almost had more correct answers than funny answers. I have to reward the creativity and time that went into making that Tim Kitzrow post...

TBone got a JJC for overall humor....

KT got a JJC point for pontificating on nearly every critical element of today's theme in his answer, yet being unable to come up with it despite the fact that he was the one who posted the transcript for the last 9 questions of Meisha's show just 2 months ago.....

Comrade 1000aires's answers were unreadable, but he gets 5 JJC points for being a complete and utter tool....

Starfish got a JJC point for sharing with us his obsession for ranking popular songs based on year.....

Andrew Gold? I could have sworn that song was sung by a woman. I should have put "Golden Girls Theme Singer", ha!

I forgot to write down the extra JJC in the notebook, but it is there now so it will go into the updated standings if I ever get around to them this morning....

No, his name was Tracy. What is it with the names that could go either way? I handed him off to my friend Maria, who ended up playing for the other side. I guess she would take my rejects to make her parents happy, then break up with them herself and say I was right all along and they were jerks. Once she was on her own she was free to go public with Irene, and they were still together 15 years later the last time I saw her.

I thought I had a boring life, but I guess not...
