Re: The Most Boring Movie I have EVER Seen
Vincent Gallo's "The Brown Bunny" was incredibly boring all the way to the end. The last scene (an no, I'm not talking about the scene that generated all the controversy--that was boring too) redeemed the picture somewhat, but getting to that point was pure drudgery. My wife and I made jokes watching it -- "more driving," "he's driving some more," etc.

Why are you trying to convince me that I'm wrong? I'm not trying to convince you that you're wrong. The initial question posed was "Did anybody like this movie?" [The underlying implication being that nobody could possibly like it.] I was just saying that, yes, some of us out there did.Sir_Galahad wrote:But, you're a writer, Frank, so, I would think, you would tend to view a movie with the dialogue in mind. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But, I'm a watcher and I want to be entertained. I also get bored by movies that put too much gratuitous action, car crashes and violence in a movie. I am more interested to see how a writer / director interweaves these facets with the plot and dialogue.franktangredi wrote:Actually, I did find the dialogue to be very clever and very entertaining.Sir_Galahad wrote: And I agree with that's how most of the critics probably saw the film. But, for my money, I would have rather seen those actors in movies that I felt was worth my $10. I watch a movie for it's entertainment value - not art value. AFAIC, this one had no entertainment value at all. Zilch. Zero. Nada.
But that's me. I get bored by 'action' movies.
You say 'I want to be entertained' as if I don't! And I don't view all movies with dialogue in mind. Some of my favorite movies don't have any dialogue at all. In this particular movie, a large part of the entertainment value was in the dialogue, and I appreciate it on that level.

The Trial of Billy Jack. I actually have no idea if the entire movie was as boring as the first hoour since my friends insisted on leaving. Since they drove, I had no choice. It's the only movie I have ever walked out on.

I've been tempted to pick up Billy Jack Goes to Washington (which never played theatrically) to see how bad it is but I've never gotten around to it.

Re: The Most Boring Movie I have EVER Seen
Fully agree. We rented this to see what all the buzz was about. I don't think either of us made it to the killing. It was maybe the first time I've ever turned off a rented movie before it ended. GW may bail out early, as she did here, but I usually make it to the end. Not this time. By forty-five minutes in, I decided I didn't give a rat's ass about any of the characters or what happened to them.Sir_Galahad wrote:Yesterday, I watched what I thought was going to be an entertaining suspense mystery movie. As it turns out, it was one of the most boring snoozefests I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot of them). Let's see if you can figure out the movie from my brief synopsis. I will identify the movie in a spoiler at the end.
It starts out with a group of people arriving at a house. They were invited by the host to go on a hunting trip. For the next hour or so, all that happens is talk, talk and more talk. Then, they go pheasant hunting which, IMO, turns out to be the most exciting part of the film. Then they go back to the house and talk some more. Then, the host (at least I think it was the host, gets killed). And, for the next hour, an inspector shows up (would have better if it was Inspector Clousseau) there is some milling around and talking until the denouement which turns out to be another big yawn. Can you guess the movie? Did anybody like this film? It had a star-studded cast but I didn't get it (the entertainment portion of this film, at least).

Haven't seen the movie that is the subject of this thread, but my entry would be:
Shark Tale.
Closest I have ever come to walking out of a movie. No idea why I didn't.
It's still not the worst movie I've ever seen. That distinction still rests with Dr. T & the Women.

Never saw it.
Many times, I can tell, just from a movie's title, that I won't like it.
Gosford Park was one of those (confirmed by the description of it given in this thread).
PS- I see it's a Robert Altman movie. That explains a lot.

I'm not at all trying to convince you that you're wrong! I never consider an opinion to be wrong. I was merely making the point that you probably viewed the movie with a different eye than I did. That from a perspective of being a writer since you pointed out that you liked the dialogue. Of course, we all want to be entertained when we see a movie. But, I think we can see a movie from different angles which, I think, is the case here. No offense was intended and I'm sorry if that's how you took my post.franktangredi wrote: Why are you trying to convince me that I'm wrong? I'm not trying to convince you that you're wrong. To be fair, I fully understand that Gosford Park is not an easy movie to enjoy. I think I appreciated it more than I out-and-out enjoyed it. (Although I did enjoy the acting and the dialogue, and got some really good laughs out of it.) I think Altman succeeded brilliantly in presenting an overall picture of a certain society, with lots of telling details. It was not told in a linear fashion, which did make it hard to follow. It's more like one of those Hogarth engravings that are crammed with interesting stuff. [Or a jigsaw puzzle, which is how I've often described Altman's best movie, Nashville.]
It's certainly not to everybody's taste, but I think it would be a poorer world if nobody made movies like this along with the other kinds.
Cassavetes, on the other hand, I find pretentious....

Re: The Most Boring Movie I have EVER Seen
I might watch Gosford Park on TV but I would never pay to see it. Just a personal preference.
The most boring movie I have ever watched parts of would be Terms of Endearment. Fell asleep in the theater, fell asleep watching it on video, and fell asleep attempting to watch it on video the second time. I hear it's good but I've never made it past the 20 minute mark.

Re: The Most Boring Movie I have EVER Seen
I liked Gosford Park but I can see where it would not suit a lot of folks. The plot is not the point, and is in fact muchly irrelevant. I wanted to like Altman's Nashville, but the sound was so poor on my copy that we gave up after 30 minutes. Or maybe it was poor in the original, and that was part of the point. But I could not make out what folks were saying.
But I adored A Prairie Home Companion, so it's not an Altman bias for me. But that one had only a few characters to keep up with, unlike most of his movies.
There are enough movies the other way around, that lots of folks loved and I don't get. It doesn't help much to get into these conversations where we try to convince others to agree with our preferences. Just like with music - it is about preferences rather than right/wrong. I appreciate understanding why visual folks like 2001: A Space Odyssey, for instance. But I wanted those two hours of my life back, right quick.
I appreciate our striving for understanding each other rather than criticizing, which is too often the case, even here.

Re: The Most Boring Movie I have EVER Seen
I really enjoyed Gosford Park. I expect I'll enjoy any movie that gives Kelly Macdonald significant screen time.
Only movie I've ever walked out on was It Could Happen To You. It probably would have been terrible anyway but if I ever want to hear something that sounds like Rosie Perez again I'll just go to the dentist.
Don't know why I didn't walk out on Event Horizon.

Characters in Altman movies frequently talk over each other in crowded scenes, and Nashville is one of the best (or worst) examples of it. Roomie has to mute the TV if it's on a commercial and he wants to talk to me. I can't listen to the TV and to him. Even though I don't want to listen to the TV, I have to.

I'm going to seriously hold my tongue on most of this thread, since I'm a big Altman fan.
Even without my Altman bias, I do like "Gosford Park" (although it's hardly his best work), but whoever said it's not about the plot was exactly right. Watch, instead, for the outstanding performances by the love of my life who ISN'T married to Warren Beatty, Maggie Smith; the perfect Helen Mirren; the wonderful Kelly MacDonald; and the excellent Clive Owen, Derek Jacobi, Alan Bates, and Jeremy Northam. It's really more in the vein of "Upstairs Downstairs" than Agatha Christie, though.

Without a doubt, Tomb Raider. Not even Jon Voight, whom I normally enjoy, could keep me awake for that one! We saw it at the drive-in, and I remember trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in the back of a Dodge Caravan full of kids.
I'm with Frank -- (most) action movies bore me silly. Now I love Pirates of the Caribbean -- not least because Johnny Depp is really nice to look at
-- but they could have cut out about half an hour of sword-fighting toward the end & I'd have been perfectly happy! I think I slept through a good bit of those "action" scenes too.

Not to change the subject -- but that was how I felt the few times I tried to wade through any of P.D. James's books! I realized pretty early on that if she writes a character with a personality, who might be remotely likeable, that one's going to be the murderer. *Yawn*By forty-five minutes in, I decided I didn't give a rat's ass about any of the characters or what happened to them.
