Beast didn't use to post like this (under his own screen name instead of his many MM, anyway) until he got into this rivalry with Kay. I know the chattiness doesn't come naturally, but starting a rivalry helps.

Not that this is a race, or anything.

Actually, I did used to post like this, though that was back in the day when just about everyone used to post like this.....

You call gratuitousness chatty?
chit chat is a skill. It can be developed. You just need to want to develop that skill and then start and fail and start and fail and start and succeed and then fail and so on.

Don't forget to keep starting.

Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

--squirrelmama (10/3/07)

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Perhaps, but as IRL I'm not very sociable, so it's hard just to chime in unless I feel like I have something to contribute. Hence the lack of gratuitousness. And perhaps the lack of a callback from J! as well.

You'll be fine, Ear, anytime you're ready.

The above post is very chit-chatty. It's a post in a thread which has no relevance anywhere outside this Bored about not much -- just exactly the chattiness you're aspiring to.

Your posts in the Golden Moldies thread the other day about the Spinners were chatty also.

And you're good with gratuitousness too. A while back, I posted a copyrighted, don't even think of using this article without permission article, and you posted an Oops! Perfect gratuitousness!

Well done! You're on your way! All you have to be is ready to put skills to use that you already have.

See above, I know you have it in you. Maybe you're not especially chatty or gratuitous IRL, I don't know. But here, you're demonstrably proficient in both chattiness and gratuitousness. Well done! Carry on!

None of those examples seem either chatty or gratuitous. "Chatty" to me means prattling on about things, when generally (except for my top o' the mornin'® posts) I'm a reactor, not an actor. And "gratuitous" means posting about nothing in particular, whereas I tend only to post when responding to a direct statement. If I could produce a Venn diagram, "chatty" and "gratuitous" would overlap by a considerable degree.

Call it what you will, your remark about Starship Troopers was IMHO chatty -- light, informal talk.

As for gratuitous, I am convinced that any post in a Bored rankings thread is about nothing in particular.

Resistance is futile, Mr. C&G (Chatty and Gratuitous).

You've been prattling on all morning about this. Plus, I'd say #5 on the overall list and 3647 posts on this board alone is plenty chatty and gratuitious. (Gratuitous by your definition, not mine.)
