The high school that is closest to us, Valencia High School, has been opened as a shelter by the Red Cross.

The hills are orange and the Yorba Linda fire is moving down the hill towards the west. The color is beautiful, but I can't get a good picture to post. I have to take the pictures from my bedroom and stuff is reflected off the glass.

To get an idea of how close the Yorba Linda Fire is, It's located behind the Black Hills Golf Course, we live in the area called Alta Vista Country Club:

Directions to Fire

Looking at the same map, the Brea Fire is on Lambert Road by the 57 Freeway.

I didn't sleep very well last night. We have all of the windows closed but you can smell the fires and the air quality is horrible.

I kept waking up to check the fire out the window. At one point it looked like it had moved down the hill, closer to Imperial Highway, which scared me. The next time I checked, I could barely see it.

When I got up at 6:00 the sky was very clear. The winds are blowing the smoke away from us but both my front and back yards are covered in ash. Zap, for some reason, likes to go outside and smell the smoke and roll around in the ash. Emma thinks that he thinks that people are barbecuing and he will get some ribs.

There is a huge retail area called Savi Ranch which has a Kohl's, Costco, Best Buy, Petco, and other stores and apparently it burned down. I'm sure that the city of Yorba Linda derives a lot of its sales tax revenue from this area so there will probably be other financial consequences from this fire.

Yikes! It's not surprising, with all the homes built up in the hills, to hear of some of those burning during these brush fires. I wouldn't think that malls and big-box stores like this would be at risk, too.

Stay safe, PSM!

This morning it looked like a new pope was elected, the smoke was white, but in the last half hour as the winds have picked up, the smoke has become dark and nasty.

That's about how it looks around here, beautiful blue sky with smoke near the fire. Yesterday, the sky was dark and it looked like night.

That may be the only good thing to result from situations like this. It is just amazing how well-coordinated the sharing of fire-fighting resources and personnel is these days. I always hear about others coming here to help and vice versa.

I don't know where any of us would be without our firefighters/EMS professionals. We have folks from our fire department that participate(d) in 911, Iraq, task forces, etc. We're privileged to have a first rately trained group. I doubt they're involved in the CA fires, but, (I don't know for sure (will ask the Chief) just as the wonderful folks there and from Canada and wherever else that's accessible, they do the most remarkable things. I know SC could say the same about AB and his cohorts.

Seriously, I lurves me my firefighters.

I guess I should add my experience with the fires which were sorta close but affected my travel plans. I left early Saturday morning for Stanford in Palo Alto. Early is around 3am. I drove past the Sylmar fire near the Newhall Pass on Interstate 5. They said the wind was blowing at fifty miles an hour with seventy mile an hour gusts. My car was pushed around and there was a lot of smoke. Well, I made it through but an hour after I had passed through they closed the 5. the reason I left early is that I had a cross country meet, a men's water polo match and the football game to photograph. I got up there in plenty of time for the cross country and water polo and then went and found friends who had a motorhome and promised good food, drink and football on tv. Well, they were right about the first two but both tvs were tuned to the fires. That was ok since Navy couldn't make it two in a row over Notre Dame anyway. Anyway, I shot the football game and headed back to LA since I heard that I-5 had reopened. I got back to the Newhall Pass about 1am andI could see the fires high in the hills but nowhere near the interstate. End of travel story. I live near downtown LA so the smoke is not so bad though there is ash everywhere. Oh, and while I was driving back to LA, I passed numerous fire vehicles from NorCal heading to LA.

Perhaps only in your posts......

It was eerie to see the fires up in the hills as I drove in. But otherwise everything seemed normal when I drove into the valley save for a slight smoky smell. I looked out my window this morning and the sky is is a yellowish haze. I hope all is well down south.
