I don't think elwood would want to pack up and apply at the Williston Mecca for a job that pays a step above "minimum wage". Mecca has always set its wage scales up in each individual market to be slightly above what its competition in that market pays... and if they have decided that $17/hr. is to be the starting pay in Williston, then that $17/hr. has the same buying power in that local area as $9/hr. does here. I guess it would be good if you could commute from TX to ND and back every day, but that doesn't seem too plausible...

One of these days, people will wake up and realize that the problem facing the job market isn't the minimum wage, which is about as useless as tits on a Congressman, but the near-extinction of the full time job with real benefits in the lower class sectors of the economy. I am so thankful I was not born 15 years later....

I'll bet the prices at the Williston Mecca are three times those in Texas.

I didn't mean to come across as hectoring(or whatever the right word is). I am actually in somewhat the same boat you are. At 47, I absolutely hate where I am career-wise. That part of my life absolutely sucks. But I am trapped in it and because of that and also, for health reasons, I can't even consider looking for a job in ND (or elsewhere).

I saw it as trying to be helpful. I was also around 46 or 47 when my longtime job that I used to love started turning to crap. Good luck to you.

Not sure if they still do this, but local Walmart's were sending employees to Williston to help out in 2-week stints (or whatever). They stayed in Walmart supplied housing.

It has been widely reported that Williston Walmart doesn't even stock the shelves as stuff sells so fast and they don't have the staff.

We drove by the Williston Walmart, and I really wanted to go in-but there was no way that I wanted to make a left turn in the traffic zoo that is Williston.

>>>but the near-extinction of the full time job with real benefits in the lower class sectors of the economy.<<< There is obviously "Decline" porn related to this whole issue, on both the left and right side of the aisle, but to come down as more optimistic, I subscribe to the Mike Rowe school.

From the 538 guys. This is typical of the "Anti-Bakken" analysis that I have seen over the years.

They seem to define the ND boom as unsustainable because the exponential rate of growth won't continue until ND produces 400 million barrels a month.

Not one industry person expects the exponential rate to continue to that point. It will obviously level out.

I wonder if 538 ever predicted that ND would get to 1 million barrels a day-or was that not possible either.>>>>>>

I wonder how that group plans to replace countless 6-figure jobs for blue collar workers.
That's not what the 538 article said at all.

But that's a reading expect from the typical "the earth is a candy with a gooey petroleum center that will ooze oil forever" types.
