Last Wed. afternoon Frank noted some "valuable Tangredi speculation" had occurred on that day. Here are the posts prior to Frank's that include speculation:

A quick look at the answers shows a lot of last names that could be first names, especially if we're somewhat liberal in matching, say: Iggy Pop and Pop Warner. But I would have thought in that event that Frank would have an associated clues list, especially with people like Jesse James, since there's a huge number of Jameses he could be matched with.

The other possibility, based on the clues, is that we're matching up things that are contained inside one of the names (probably without anagramming). Thus, Don Sc(Holland)er, Grover Cleve(Land) or Patricia Ire(Land), and Pierre Beau(March)ais. Again, I'm not sure how that would be done without an associated word list.

I keep coming back to Dogberry, since I can find nothing that indicates another name to go with that character. Rearrange the letters and add an RY, and you'd have BERRY GORDY, who could match with Smokey Robinson. But that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.

Parasites require something from their host to survive. I can see "borrowing" a letter or letters from one name to make another name, but what happens to the name that letters are borrowed from? Anything?

Look at the words Parasitic and Pairs. The letters of the latter are wholly contained in the former.

I'm in the spitballing stage, in case you couldn't tell. :)
It seems to me the "working model" is likely to be the DOGBERRY + RY = BERRY GORDY, goes with SMOKEY ROBINSON suggested match, since the words inside of names idea seems to have been ruled out, and I don't think there are enough last names that can serve as first names to make 53 matches.

So when Frank said above "some of the names do take the place of associated words", does that mean one in each pair? And can we add just any two letters to an answer (not clear if just the last name or both first and last) to make a new name? Does it have to be two letters? Still seems kind of arbitrary.

There is a wider pool of famous men than women in just about any area, so I don't know how that helps us. Probably rules out an all porn star Tangredi, though.

One of the resurrected comments below, paired with a more recent post, should unlock the whole thing.

I agree that adding any random number of letters would be very arbitrary.

If Dogberry indeed yields Berry Gordy, then there must be some reason for adding RY other than the fact that it makes this one matchup work. Names like Semmelweis and Beaumarchais would seem to yield themselves to partial anagrams, but figuring out an anagram that included the complete name plus additional letters would be quite awkward.

SMOKEY ends in Y and ROBINSON starts with R, so that could explain why Y and R have to be added to DOGBERRY to make Berry Gordy, not just any two letters, and it fits the "parasitic" title. Still not sure how it explains the lack of women.

Maybe you can combine any number of consecutive letters (at least two) from first and/or last names of the two answers to make the new name, which is associated with one of the answers used. So,

TOM GOLisano + pauL Arizin = TOM GOLA, associated with Paul Arizin

Is that right? I'm having trouble coming up with additional pairs, so I'm not sure.

This pair is correct. There is something true about this particular pair that is not true of most of the others, which has unfortunately led you into more complicated channels.

Put this pair together with one of the speculations you resurrected earlier this morning, and you've got it.

Could we be talking about the RY being right and the A being the exception because of the single letter?

Can't really play @ work.

So, the Dogberry one is not correct?

I have to assume the other speculation is "Look at the words Parasitic and Pairs. The letters of the latter are wholly contained in the former."

MARTIN ARROWSMITH, if he's going to be associated with anybody, pretty much has to be associated with Sinclair Lewis. Maybe Elmer Gantry or Babbitt (forget first name)? SEMMELWEIS contains the letters in Lewis consecutively, WILKERSON non-consecutively. If first names are included than WILLIAM SHOCKLEY and WILLIAM MANCHESTER work too.

JAYNE TORVILL pretty much has to go with Christopher Dean if she is associated with a person, but we have SCHOLLANDER, ANDERSON, and two ALEXANDERs which all contain the letters in Dean consecutively, along with several others non-consecutively. I guess since Golisano doesn't contain Gola consecutively then that doesn't matter. We do have CHRISTOPHER ALEXANDER, so that would work like Tom Golisano did. But no Sinclair or Elmer to work with Arrowsmith.

And still no clue why women couldn't be used as easily as men.

I don't think I'm getting it.

Take the first name and some of the letters in the second name and that yields a person associated with the second person.

Another example:

George Jefferson becomes George Jones who goes with Tammy Wynette.

Similarly, Norman Hartnell becomes Norman Lear, who is associated with George Jefferson, one of the people used twice.

Ok, I guess that was it. PAUL CASTELLANO + BILL GATES = Paul Allen
Arrowsmith is probably the host instead of the parasite.

Still don't understand the women, though.

The thing with the women happened simply because there are more famous men to choose from. The odds of finding a pair of Johns or Williams in which the surname of one contains all of the letters of the others, is higher than the odds of finding a pair of Janes or even Marys that fulfills that condition, simply because there are more Johns and Williams to choose from. (Especially since I didn't want to overload this with actresses.)

I hope I didn't do anything to make this more confusing. The key observation about the title -- that all of the letters in PAIRS are contained in the word PARASITIC -- came pretty early on. Once Melly came up with the Golisano/Arizin pair, I thought we were there. The discarded letters are just the dross.

Re: Game #145: Parasitic Pairs

#125 Post by franktangredi » Tue Jun 03, 2014 2:53 pm

Three of the pairs on this consolidation are not what I had in mind:

One is a legitimate pair, and the constructed name is correct; that will simply have to work itself out.

There's another pair where the constructed name is also correct, but I don't see a strong link between the two people; though they are in the same general field, they are separated by more than a century. Each of them has a more legitimate mate.

In the third pair, the constructed name is something I would never, ever do!

And Pat Robertson seems to have fallen out.

Overall, nice job!
