What's Sarah Palin trying to do to my kid????

No, not really.

I just need a reality check on day care security.

It's Frankie's first day in day care, and we got up early and took our time dropping him off. It's our first-choice daycare (though it's more expensive than we want to pay), we really like the teachers and we think he'll be really happy and flourish.

Of course, I still took my lunch hour to go see how he was doing.

When I got to the building, someone was just leaving, so I rang the bell and walked in through the open door. The guy behind the desk asked if he could help me, and I explained that my son was in his first day there and I was on lunch and wanted to drop by and say hi. He asked what class he was in (I surprised myself by being able to say "dancing dolphins" with a straight face) and he pointed me in the right direction.

He had never seen me before and didn't ask for any ID. Hell, he didn't even ask for my name, or Frankie's. I thought about giving him a lecture on it, but I decided against.

This is in Evanston. It's a close-in, fairly safe, pretty affluent (though we aren't; we can't afford to live there) suburb of Chicago.

So. Am I being paranoid? If I'm not being paranoid, if I have a legit beef, how would y'all handle it? I don't want to piss off the staff on the first day.

The kid was doing great, by the way. He's always been fascinated with watching slightly older kids, which had me a little worried; he's in with the infants and he's the oldest, and he is doing lots of things, crawling, pulling himself up to standing, "talking" in nonsense words, etc that no one else in the class is doing. He's already drunk way more milk than I can get him to take in a day (though he's eaten very little solid food (I still think it's hilarious that people call pureed whatever "solid food")) and he stood by himself for about ten seconds before he realized he wasn't holding onto anything, got scared and fell down.

It legit. You should share your concerns with the school's director.

Damn right!

I agree. In these strange days strange people are everywhere.
Well, then

Completely legit.

If it were me, the way I approach it would be to ask what the policy is on visitors coming into the building (unless you already know it).

Then what you say really depends on the answer. But I would keep the tone very civil and just express your concern that any crazy could come off the street and go for a kid. Now the next line of defense was the teacher, so you probably couldn't get out with a kid but why not stop the crazies at the door. I'm sure they will agree. It is definitely worth bringing up.

I have 2 words for you: Laurie Dann

She's the reason we lock doors, ask for ID's, have the Raptor system.

and she lived just up the road from you in Wilmette.
