Re: Timeline, Game 2 Tuesday Sept 2

Here's Fanny! wrote:Note: On the rules, I said each game would be open until noon the next day or when I posted the new game, whichever came first. I meant that the opposite way. All games will be open until noon the following day, longer if I haven’t posted the next game yet. I’ll update my previous post as well (although nobody reads the rules posts…..ha!)

Timeline - September 2

“Heads Are Gonna Roll!”

Guess what today is? National Beheading Day! I know, wtf? Not sure what nation that is, but it gives me an excuse for a gory Timeline, so why not? Ha!

Given the nature of today’s subject this will obviously be heavy on England in the 1500 and 1600s. Perhaps surprising that I only have one French one, but most of their noteworthy chops were within too short a span of years to really be fair. So today we introduce two more Timeline elements, the Well and the Bogies.

The Well is a list of the correct years for all the questions, you just have to pick which one goes with which. But wait!, you might say, there are 10 questions but 14 dates in the Well! Why yes, you didn’t expect it to be that easy, did you? There are four “bogies”, (no, I have no idea why they are called that, you’d have to ask Vandal) which are red herring dates that don’t figure into the game. And, since this is a little more involved than a normal Tuesday game would be (but I had to take advantage of NBD!), I’ll still give a couple of Freebies (hints), too.

For today, copying the questions into your answer is optional, but helpful. So your (spoiled) answer would read:

1. Blah, blah, blah

Holofernes, 850433 BC

Followed by the bonus question and your bogie guesses.

And with all the questions and other accoutrements, this post is going to be way too long, so I’ll put the actual game in the next post. And, no, I don't know the rule for setting off titles of movies v. books v. whatever. And I don't care, just be happy I set them off at all. Ha!

Update: I have on good authority (the Great and Powerful V himself), that bogie is short for "bogus answer", so there goes my 'I don't know nothing 'bout no golf' excuse.
I'm assuming that noon means noon Fanny's time, which also means noon my time. If not, I'll take my zero...
-- In Iroquois society, leaders are encouraged to remember seven generations in the past and consider seven generations in the future when making decisions that affect the people.
-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller

Timeline - September 2

Heads Are Gonna Roll!

Since I messed up on decades v. centuries, I decided to give 1 point per bogie instead of the all or nothing 5 points with a 1 point bonus for getting all four of them. So everybody can thank fman and aj for that!

1. More a victim of circumstances and machinations than anything else, she was executed after a nine day reign as Queen of England.

Lady Jane Grey, 1554

In answer to Papa's query, her reign was in 1553, but she wasn't actually executed until February of 1554. Point for me!

2. This journalist’s widow Mariane, wrote the best-selling memoir A Mighty Heart, which was then adapted into a movie starring Angelina Jolie.

Daniel Pearl, 2002

3. Considered responsible for the beheading of Charles I, this leader of the Roundheads was himself beheaded by Charles II. Although he had to be exhumed to do it, since he’d died six years earlier (the date is the beheading, not his death).

Oliver Cromwell, 1661

In answer to Papa's query, oops! I have no idea how I subtracted 1661 from 1558 and got 6. I even checked the encyclopedia page I used to see if I'd looked at some other date in the same paragraph. Nope. (Yes, I actually have a set of encyclopedias in the same room as the computer and use them more than I use Google. Ha!) Point for Papa!

4. The Fritz Lang movie “M” was loosely based on this German serial killer known as The Vampire of Dusseldorf.

Peter Kurten, 1931

Mel came closest on this with the first name, so I gave her 3 points because it was admittedly an almost impossible question. But you all know that I couldn't resist a decapitated serial killer!

5. Spanish conquistador credit with the discovery of the Pacific Ocean.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa, 1519

6. Father of Jennifer Jason Leigh, his death was a result of an accident on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Vic Morrow, 1982

I gave Marley 3 points for remembering Combat! (the cast of which, oddly enough, also included Boris Sagal, another actor who had a run in with the wrong end of a helicopter) and PSM got 3 points for Vic Tayback just because it made me laugh to picture Mel banging on the bell with his spatula and Flo going all Highlander on him, with his little hat flying.

7. This French heroine was guillotined at the age of 24 for the bathtub assassination of Jacobin Jean-Paul Marat.

Charlotte Corday, 1793

LFHP got double points for Paris Hilton.

8. Wife of Henry VIII known as ‘the rose without a thorn”, her bloom must’ve worn off pretty quick, as she went from the altar to the block in about 18 months.

Catherine Howard, 1542

I caught a couple people on this with Anne Boleyn, which was why I specified the length of the marriage, to make it a bit more sporting.

9. Contrary to popular belief, this actress (known as “The Poor Man’s Marilyn“) was not decapitated in the car accident that took her life, although the truth is just about as bad (if not worse).

Jayne Mansfield, 1967

10. English poet and explorer who was knighted by Elizabeth I in 1585 and beheaded under the rule of James I.

Sir Walter Raleigh, 1618

I'm still laughing just from saying Wally Raleigh out loud. Try it, it's fun!

Bonus: The Emmy-winning daughter of the actress in #9 is the star of what current long running television series?

Law & Order: SVU

The actress is Mariska Hargitay (if you look closely at her desk in the precinct you'll see a picture of her mom. I'm not sure if Stabler has a picture of Beecher. Ha!) I gave half credit for just Law & Order and I think I gave some people half credit for putting Hargitay rather than the show name.

Butch, if you'd put down I Love New York, which has a female lead, instead of Flavour of Love, you would have gotten points on this one, too.

Bogies:

1601, 1881, 1991, 1998

A lot of people forgot to specify their bogies and cost themselves some points. Wintergreen would have tied Mac for high score of the day.

I have to leave for a doctor's appointment, so I'll post the points and update the standings page when I get back. Because I gave some people half credit for a few things that I'm not sure I remembered here and I can't check it because they're not on the review page, and I want to note them with the points.

Looks like the only partials and whatnot I didn't put in the answers post where tmitss got credit for 1932 since it was obviously a typo, Ellie got full credit for answering in two posts because it was her first time and I love that she played.

Besides people not grabbing the bogie points, Starfish just picked the years, so he might have missed out on some points and some people just leave a question blank if they don't know the person. Whenever the years are listed for you, always just take a shot and put a year in. You never know, you might get lucky.

LFHP got 3 points for Irene Ryan, 10 for Paris Hilton and just knowing who Pau Gasol is was enough for 5 points.

Sports, you were here in time (yes, it's noon God's time), but you didn't post your answers! But you get 5 participation points.

British History is my favorite topic. I probably won't do as well on your game this month.
