Now that I've made my political post of the day, I would add that it's been seven years since I joined this Bored. Originally, I did so to get advice on how best to get on the show.
I'm a member of other boards, like the Cruise Critic board, where I got similar advice about booking my various cruises. The Cruise Critic board is a great way to get advice about getting deals on cruises, places to see, trustworthy excursions, and the advantages or disadvantages of various cruise lines. If you are planning on taking a cruise, I strongly recommend checking it out.
However, other than to make an obligatory post about my most recent cruise experience for the education of others, I haven't been back on there since I got back in town. That board and the people who post there have no interest whatsoever for me other than as a conduit of information about a highly specialized topic. When they do get into off topic discussions, such as about fuel prices (which have a direct impact on the cost of cruises), every other post involves someone saying "this is a cruise board, not a political board," and the discussion dies down very quickly. I've made less than 50 posts there in over three and a half years on that board.
There are a few people for whom cruising is a life's passion and they spend huge amounts of time on that board. But you read their posts and learn nothing about them other than their cruise line and destination preferences. There's almost never a political post, never a sports post (other than to ask if footaball games are televised on board), never a religious post, never a post about good or bad personal experiences.
That's what this board offers that the others don't. We are a community of a few hundred people in all parts of the country who originally came together out of a love of one thing but who stayed together since then. We are a family of sorts, with some cranky aunts and uncles, a few wackos (not me, of course), but who stay together through good times and bad, through ups and downs.
The political posts (and the sports and movie and personal and religous posts) don't distract from this Bored. They are this Bored.
