Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Hmm, two choices I can think of, The Firebird and The Rite of Spring. Unfortunately don't know much about either except the name. I will SWAG The Firebird. Sounds more deadly...

4. Who succeeded Vladimir Putin as president of Russia in May 2008?

I'll guess St. Peter's Cathedral.

I'll guess Marshal Tito.

3. What Stravinsky ballet, depicting a pagan ritual where a girl dances herself to death, provoked a riot during its premiere in Paris?

I'll guess The Rites of Spring, just because it's the only Stravinsky ballet I can think of.

I'll guess Dmitriy Medvedev but will not be Looking for Spelling Points.

ANSWERS

1. This church in Moscow's Red Square is commonly known as what saint's Cathedral?
Image

Saint Basil. It's more formally known as The Cathedral of Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat, but I can see why it's easier to call it St. Basil's. ;)

2. What Yugoslav president (and former partisan leader during World War II) died on May 4, 1980?

Josip Broz Tito. An interesting discovery for me, while researching this question: During World War I, he was a draftee in the Austro-Hungarian army when he was wounded and then captured by the Russians, on the same front where my grandmother's family were civilians, suffering through the war.
It was during his time as a POW in Russia that Tito became a Bolshevik.

3. What Stravinsky ballet, depicting a pagan ritual where a girl dances herself to death, provoked a riot during its premiere in Paris?

The Rite of Spring a.k.a Le Sacre du Printemps. This is one of those questions that could get you in trouble on J!, for those who pluralized "Rites", but I let this one slide.

4. Who succeeded Vladimir Putin as president of Russia in May 2008?

Dmitry Medvedev. Tmitsss's "Mendelev" answer was close enough for half credit (but no bonus), and I also gave Annie half credit for knowing his first name. Full humor points credit for Putinsochpuppetiov. ;)
