I can't believe I'm turning 40 at the end of this week. Usually I wouldn't announce something like that ahead of time, but this is a pretty big milestone, and I'm kinda freaking out a bit. I'm looking at my life right now, and I'm not satisfied with where I am. My God, I'm almost over the hill, and what have I made of myself? It doesn't feel like much. Sigh. End of self-pity session, I gotta think positive now somehow. Thanks for listening.

Everybody hates turning 40. We're programmed to hate turning 40. Here's the big secret, though. (Don't let on that I let it slip.) Life just keeps getting better. Yep. It's true!

As far as your goals and aspirations go, you're not done yet! I predict that you've got another 50 or 60 years in which to bring your life and career to exactly the point where you want it to be. ("But," the doubters say, "what if JBG wants to retire? That's only 30 years away." Well, JBG can do in 30 years what it would take the rest of us 50, so it's still okay.)

Second, congrats on turning 40.

Its not so bad....once you get to 42 or 43 you're pretty used to it.

Chin up. There is still plenty of life to be lived. And you can do with it what you wish.

JBG, I have a few years on you and what I have seen over the past decade or two is that other people tend make a bigger deal out of your birthday than you do. The key is just to grab and enjoy every day as if it was a celebration of life regardless of the number of days you have enjoyed them. Have a great day!

The last of my close cousins just turned 50. Move over, young'un! And go reread all those articles about Dara Torres, age 41.

If we had eight fingers, you'd have been complaining at what we call age 32. It's all a matter of perspective. Will you feel different on your birthday than you did the day before? Will you suddenly start eating Bran Flakes and downing Metamucil? Will your vision go from 20/20 to 20/200 overnight? Just go out, have fun, and keep on doing what you've been doing, just more so. You'll be fine.

I didn't feel any different after 40. Professionally, I'm worse than nowhere. Buttwiper and dishwasher and all that. Personally, I'm in a good place.

Towel? As if! If it fits in the dishwasher and isn't alive or doesn't have batteries, it goes in the dishwasher. I don't do hand-washing. And the moist flushable wipes for the Tiny Hiney go down the drain...

I had not even written my first full-length play by the time I turned 40. And believe me: I just turned 54 and do not feel in the least 'over the hill.' It will pass.
