The Mecca 100 - #100-96

Introduction

No point in waiting another day since I have this week's installment ready to go....

#100. "Dylan Thomas" - Better Oblivion Community Center (2019)

And we start off with a rather interesting song by the short-lived duo of Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers with the rather odd, lengthy band name. They got together to release a single, self-titled album in January 2019, of which "Dylan Thomas" became its flagship song. It got a lot of airplay on Mecca Radio circa 2022 or so, and is still heard from time to time today. The song has nothing to do with the early 20th Century poet, he just happens to be namedropped in the song, and incorrectly so as he did not die from "a seizure on the barroom floor." Still, the lyrics in this one are pretty cool, and the song is sung clearly and slowly enough that you can easily follow along with them!

Interestingly enough, this will be one of three songs in this countdown whose title is the name of a famous person...

#99. "This Is Why" - Paramore (2022)

So, apparently Mecca Radio plays a lot of Paramore, as they seem to come up time and time again when looking up earworms I hear at work. I was first introduced to the group when Clem and Fanny both Kroxed "The Only Exception" for my bands with exactly one female member LSWE game about 15 years ago... and it was not too long after that I first heard that very song played at work. Despite their prominence, this is the only Paramore song in this countdown... but only because I couldn't include their big 2014 hit "Ain't It Fun," which was played to death on regular radio as well.

#98. "Feels Like I'm In Love" - Kelly Marie (1980)

Disco, what can you say? Nothing was safe from it. In 1977, Ray Dorset of Mungo Jerry ("In the Summertime") wrote a song intended for none other than Elvis Presley. But when The King died on his throne before he could record it, Dorset had his band record it instead and it only wound up as a B-side release in Europe. Scottish diva Kelly Marie gave it a disco spin in 1980 and wound up with a #1 UK hit, and a Top 10 nearly everywhere else. The song only made the Dance Play charts in the US, oh, and also Mecca Radio a few years ago. This video of Kelly performing the song on some European music show almost has to be seen to be believed...

#97. "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers (2014)

Bleachers is an indie band founded and fronted by Jack Antonoff, guitarist for the better known early 2010's group Fun (or fun.). He started Bleachers as a side project that is still active today, and their debut album Strange Desire put a pair of songs on the Mecca CD's that were my nightly soundtrack from 2013-15, and both will appear in this countdown. "Rollercoaster," like much of their music, has a bit of an 80's vibe to it...

#96. "Be OK" - Ingrid Michaelson (2008)

Speaking of artists who will appear twice in this countdown (and there aren't many), we have Ingrid Michaelson who got her start releasing a self-recorded album on Myspace back when that was a thing. She got her big break in 2006 when her album was discovered by the music producer for the TV show Grey's Anatomy. This is a snappy little tune from her album of the same name, also the first to be released after she'd signed a recording contract, which was released to help support the organization Stand Up To Cancer. This song is also one of many alums in this countdown from the Mecca CD's...
