Fire up the toaster!

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Wed Sep 07, 2022 12:41 am

Washington has lost 88 games this season so the Nationals cannot win more than 74 games. The Mets have won 85 games so Washington cannot win the National League Eastern Division. Atlanta has won 85 games so Washington will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers and the Padres each have won at least 75 games, so the Nationals will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Philadelphia has won 74 games and has already clinched the season series against Washington. Moreover, for every possible combination of National League teams finishing with 74 wins, Washington cannot finish first in head-to-head games. Washington will therefore finish behind either Philadelphia or another non-division winner.

I cannot tell a lie. Washington has been toastified. --Bob

Oakland has lost 87 games this season so the As cannot win more than 75 games. Houston has won 87 games so Oakland cannot win the American League Western Division. Seattle has won 77 games so the As will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division. The Yankees and the Rays each have won at least 76 games, so the As will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Eastern Division. Toronto has won 75 games, Baltimore has won 72 games, and the Blue Jays and Orioles have 7 games remaining against each other, so at least one of those two teams will win at least 77 games. Therefore, the As will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division.

Once again, there is no there there. Oakland has been toastified. --Bob

Pittsburgh has lost 87 games so the Pirates cannot win more than 75 games. St. Louis has already won 82 games so Pittsburgh cannot win the National League Central Division. The Mets, Atlanta, and Philadelphia each have won at least 77 games so the Pirates will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers and San Diego each have won at least 77 games so Pittsburgh will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division.

Cry me three rivers. The Pirates have been toastified. --Bob

Detroit has lost 86 games so the Tigers cannot win more than 76 games. Cleveland has won 73 games, the White Sox have won 72 games, and Minnesota has won 69 games, for a total of 214 wins between them. The Guardians have 4 games remaining against Chicago and 4 games remaining against the Twins. Chicago and Minnesota have 6 games remaining against each other. That means those three teams will finish with a total of at least 228 wins between them, so unless all three teams finish tied with 76 wins, at least one of them will end the season with at least 77 wins. Detroit is guaranteed to lose the season series to all three of Cleveland, Chicago, and Minnesota, so the Tigers cannot win any tiebreaker involving those three teams. Thus, Detroit cannot win the American League Central Division.

Houston and Seattle each have won at least 79 games so Detroit will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division. The Yankees, the Rays, and the Blue Jays each have won at least 78 games so the Tigers also will finish behind two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division.

El Mago couldn’t work his magic this year. Detroit has been toastified.

Note: I am aware that mlb.com and ESPN list the Dodgers as having clinched a playoff berth. They're wrong. It's possible for the Dodgers to finish behind San Diego, behind 3 NL East teams, and tied with St. Louis and Milwaukee at 96 wins. In that scenario, Milwaukee would win the tiebreak against St. Louis to win the NL Central and St. Louis would win the tiebreak against the Dodgers for the final Wild Card spot. None of this, of course, is remotely likely, but it's not mathematically foreclosed. —Bob

I was under the impression that MLB does not use tiebreaks if the loser of the tiebreak would not qualify for the playoffs. Instead, they would have a one-game playoff to break the tie.

That changed this year. No more Game 163. The issue is that the teams that get byes can't get too much time off, or what's supposed to be an advantage turns into a disadvantage because they can't keep their timing. --Bob

Kansas City has lost 85 games so the Royals cannot win more than 77 games. Cleveland has won 75 games, the White Sox have won 73 games, and Minnesota has won 70 games, for a total of 218 wins between them. The Guardians have 4 games remaining against Chicago and 4 games remaining against the Twins. Chicago and Minnesota have 6 games remaining against each other. That means those three teams will finish with a total of at least 232 wins between them, so at least one of them will end the season with at least 78 wins. The Royals therefore cannot win the American League Central Division.

The Yankees, The Blue Jays, and the Rays all have won at least 79 games so Kansas City will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division. The hopes of Royals fans this year have been barbecued. Kansas City has been toastified. --Bob

Might as well turn on WKRP, because there will be no post-season baseball this year in Cincinnati. The Reds have been toastified. --Bob

Miami has lost 85 games so the Marlins cannot win more than 77 games. The Mets have won 89 games so Miami cannot win the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers and Padres each have won at least 78 games so Miami also will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division.

and in tonight’s game

Yordan Alvarez homers in the 1st
Yordan Alvarez homers in the 3rd
Yordan Alvarez homers in the 5th
Yordan Alvarez singles in the 7th

What an odd night he had

No bottom of the 9th needed for the ‘stros tonight.

Texas has lost 82 games so the Rangers cannot win more than 80 games. Houston has won 95 games so Texas cannot win the American League Western Division. The Yankees, Toronto, and Tampa Bay each have won at least 81 games, so the Rangers will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division. Seattle has won 80 games, but there is no combination of ties involving Texas and Seattle that allows Texas avoid finishing below .500 in the head-to-head tiebreaker among the tied teams, so Texas cannot win any possible tie-breaker that involves the Rangers and the Mariners. Thus, Texas will finish behind at least one additional non-division winner.

Might as well watch old Chuck Norris reruns. The Rangers have been toastified. --Bob

Colorado has lost 82 games so the Rockies cannot win more than 80 games. The Dodgers have won 100 games so Colorado cannot win the National League Western Division. San Diego has won 81 games so the Rockies will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. The Mets and Atlanta each have won at least 91 games so Colorado will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division. Philadelphia has won 80 games and the Rockies cannot reach .500 in common games in any tie-break that involves the Phillies, so Colorado cannot win a tie-break involving Philadelphia, so the Rockies also will finish behind at least one more non-division winner.

No Rocky Mountain highs this year. Colorado has been toastified. --Bob
