RIP, cousin.

I'm almost 70 years old and until today, Elizabeth was Queen of England my entire life. The older I got, the harder a time I had wrapping my head around it.

Amazingly, she appeared in public two days ago to meet with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss (she had the traditional farewell meeting with Boris Johnson a few days earlier). She looked surprisingly good in the photos with Truss, so whatever happened must have come upon her fairly suddenly.

She was crowned June 2, 1953. That might have been after your birthday.

Charles immediately becomes king, but has to decide on his "royal" name. Charles does not have a good history in British history (I was beheaded by Parliament and II was gernerally detested) so I doubt he will become Charles III. His full name is Charles Philip Arthur George and he can choose any of those. I'm betting on Philip as a tribute to his father or George VII after his grandfather. He would really be setting himself for failure if he decided to be King Arthur.

My understanding is that she became Queen immediately upon her father's death, just as Charles is now King. The coronation was delayed to allow a period of mourning for King George and to plan all the activities. I presume Charles will also have a coronation ceremony sometime in the future.

They're already referring to him as Charles III. Like his given named predecessors, Charles III doesn't have the best reputation with the public either.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The Queen is dead.

Long live the King!

I am a big admirer of Queen Elizabeth. I hope King Charles lives up to his legacy.

He could go for Charles Philip to honor his father, who passed away last year, but the dual regnal name seems a bit pretentious even for the British.

I hope he picks George.

I haven't looked up any dates yet-but, I have always heard that she was staying at the Tree Tops Lodge in Kenya when her father died and that she went upstairs a Princess and came down a Queen.

She was the last world leader with a WW2 role-she was a motor pool mechanic during the war.
