Today's action saw the Mets extend their winning streak to five games, and their lead in the National League East to ten and a half games. --Bob

I've gotta admit, I thought this year would be different. But in keeping with historical norms, the Mets have now fallen out of first place. --Bob

History will not repeat itself. At least, not with precision. Last year, once Atlanta overhauled the Mets, the Mets never again sniffed first place. This year, tonight's results again leave the Mets in undisputed possession of first place in the National League Eastern Division. --Bob

Although the Mets still retain control of their own destiny, it's starting to look ominous. They are now facing their biggest deficit of the season with very few games left. --Bob

What am I missing?
They are 1 game behind the Braves. They play the Braves on Sunday. They win, they are tied with 3 games left playing the Nationals, the team with the worst record in Major League Baseball. How is that ominous?

First, they've gotta win tomorrow after losing two games started by deGrom and Scherzer, respectively. Second, Atlanta finishes the season against Miami, so they don't have a much tougher opponent. And the Mets have not demonstrated a consistent ability to sweep inferior opponents. --Bob

The Marlins recently split a series with the Mets, and are ahead 2 games to 1 against the Brewers. Not bad for a team with nothing to play for, on the road. The Atlanta series are their final home games of 2022.

I find it interesting that the NLCS has the two bottom seeds competing for the championship while the ALCS has the top two seeds. Should be an interesting World Series. Will the World Series winner be a below 90 game winner for the 2nd year in a row?

It would actually be the third year in a row, counting the 2020 abbreviated season.

Technically, yes. But the team with the best record in baseball in 2020 won the 2020 World Series.
