The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix

I just finished the Lincoln Lawyer series on Netflix. It's based on the novels by Michael Connelly, who created Bosch as well. This series is based primarily on the second novel in the series, while the earlier movie with Matthew McConaughey was based on the first novel. This time, the lead character, Mickey Haller, is played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Haller's character is half-Mexican which explains the casting. He's also Harry Bosch's half-brother (same father, different mothers). The series was created by David E. Kelley and Ted Humphrey (who created The Good Wife), and Connelly helped write the scripts for the episodes. Fans of Bosch or Connelly's books will like the series. The last four hours (out of ten) take place primarily in the courtroom. The series is self-contained but there's a natural lead-in should Netflix bring it back for another season.

In the series, Haller takes over the caseload of a murdered fellow attorney, including a high-profile case involving a tech CEO accused of killing his wife and her boyfriend. That case takes up much of the storyline. There's one big difference between this series and the novel it's based on. In the book, Harry Bosch is the cop who is investigating the case of the murdered attorney. Since this is a Netflix series, and Bosch is on Amazon, they created a new character as the detective in charge of the case.

Netflix announced yesterday that The Lincoln Lawyer has been renewed for a second ten-episode season. This season will be based on another novel in the series, The Fourth Witness.

We’re through seven episodes and are really enjoying this series. Haller’s family dynamic plays out nicely and his lawyer scenes appear to be realistic. -ish.

Looking forward to finishing this season and on to S2.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 will be released in two parts this summer. Part 1 premieres on July 6 with Part 2 following on Aug. 3.

The Lincoln Lawyer has been renewed for a third 10-episode season on Netflix. It will be based on the fifth novel in the series, The Gods of Guilt. Neve Campbell will not be in the cast next season, but the rest of the regular cast will.
