Interesting Playoff Scenario
As things stand now, at approximately 5:00 pm, the Pittsburgh Steelers hold the seventh and last playoff spot. The Raiders and Chargers will play tonight, and the winner will make the playoffs as a wildcard, while the loser is eliminated.
However, if the Raiders/Charges team ends in a tie, both of them would make the playoffs and the Steelers would be eliminated. So it would be to their mutual advantage to muck around for three hours and have the game end in a scoreless tie. This has happened in the past in World Cup soccer qualifying matches where two teams went into the last qualifying game and knew that both could qualify (at the expense of a third team) if the game ended in a particular way.
I don't think the NFL would look highly on this, but I'm not sure there's anything they could do under the current rules.

Re: Interesting Playoff Scenario
Only someone who knows nothing about football and never played the game would think that 2 teams could “muck around” for four quarters.
Plus, the Raiders get a much better matchup if they win rather than back in with a tie. They want to avoid playing the Chiefs, do they want to win.

Aargh! 29-22 Evil Raiders with three minutes to go!
Now, the Chargers roll to a nail-biter of a touchdown! 29-29, end of regulation! Aargh! Come on, one of y'all score a touchdown in overtime!
The announcer just said nobody in Pittsburgh can believe it. Nobody at Casa Sprots either . . .

Re: Interesting Playoff Scenario
Seven minutes left in OT, Raiders kick a field goal.
Next score wins if it's a touchdown.
If it's a field goal by the Chargers, we play on.
Come on, guys! No tie!

YAY, CARLSON!
Kicked a field goal for the Raiders with 2 seconds on the clock!
Steelers go to the playoffs!

Two problems, according to SteelersFan --
Announcer for the Kansas City game will be Cris Collinsworth, who does a terrible job on Steelers games because he does not like us.
We play Kansas City.
Well, heck. We made the playoffs. GO STEELERS!

Re: Interesting Playoff Scenario
Just like SSS discussed, two teams who didn’t try to win and just mucked around for 4 quarters plus the 20 minute OT.
I did worry that it was going to end in a tie. Luckily, the Chargers took that time out, Raiders ran that extra play to get a shorter FG, and now the Chiefs get to play the Steelers.
I think that the wild card round will go chalk in the AFC. All of the wild cards are deeply flawed with low ceilings.
I think Niners-Cowboys and Cards-Rams will be good in the NFC.

What's great about Cris Collinsworth is that everyone thinks he hates their team. Same for Joe Buck and Tony Romo. It's the sign of a well-rounded P by P or color guy.SportsFan68 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 11:25 pmTwo problems, according to SteelersFan --

PS That Raiders - Chargers game was bananas!
