Fire up the toaster!

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Sat Aug 28, 2021 8:04 pm

Baltimore has lost 88 games this season so the Orioles cannot win more than 74 games. Tampa Bay has won 81 games so Baltimore cannot win the American League Eastern Division. Boston and the Yankees each have won at least 75 games so the Orioles will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Charm City doesn't refer to Baltimore's baseball team. The Orioles have been toastified. --Bob

Assuming you posted each thread on the day of elimination, the 2018 Orioles were eliminated on August 19th. And several other years had earlier eliminations than 8/28 in the 2WC era...

Arizona has lost 90 games so the Diamondbacks cannot win more than 72 games. The Giants and the Dodgers both have won 84 games so Arizona cannot win the National League Western Division and will finish behind at least one non-division winner in that division. Milwaukee has won 81 games so the Diamondbacks will finish behind the Brewers. The Reds and the Padres both have won 71 games. The Cardinals have won 67 games. Those three teams have therefore won 209 games between them. St. Louis has 5 games remaining against Cincinnati and 3 games remaining against San Diego. The Reds, Padres, and Cardinals will therefore combine for at least 217 wins between them, so at least one of those teams will finish with at least 73 wins and Arizona also will finish behind at least three teams in the National League Western Division and/or behind at least two teams in the National League Central Division.

There will be no meaningful baseball in the desert in September. The Diamondbacks have been toastified. --Bob

Wrong.
9/20 - 9/26 there are 4 games in the desert involving the Braves who are only 2 1/2 games up on the Phillies and 3 games played in the desert involving the LA Dodgers who are currently only 1/2 game behind the division leading Giants.

The Diamondbacks can be spoilers.

Texas has lost 86 games so the Rangers cannot win more than 76 games this season. Houston has won 78 games so Texas cannot win the American League Western Division. The Rays and the Yankees each have won at least 77 games, so the Rangers will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Eastern Division. Boston has won 76 games, Oakland has won 73 games, and Seattle has won 72 games, for a total of 221 wins among the three teams. The Mariners have 7 remaining games against the As and 3 remaining games against the Red Sox, so those three teams will end up with at least 231 wins among them, which means that at least one of those teams will win at least 77 games. Therefore, Texas will finish behind a second non-division winner in the American League Eastern Division or behind a non-division winner in the American League Western Division.

I guess even futility is bigger in Texas. The Rangers have been toastified. --Bob

Pittsburgh has lost 89 games so the Pirates cannot win more than 73 games this season. Milwaukee has won 84 games so Pittsburgh cannot win the National League Central Division. The Giants and the Dodgers each have won 86 games so Pittsburgh will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Cincinnati has won 73 games, San Diego has won 72 games, and St. Louis has won 69 games for a total of 214 wins. The Cardinals have 3 games remaining against the Reds and 3 games remaining against the Padres. Thus, those three teams will combine for a total of at least 220 wins and at least one of them will reach 74 wins. Pittsburgh therefore will finish behind either a second non-division winner in the National League Western Division or a non-division winner in the National League Central Division.

This year's cannonball is a dud. The Pirates have been toastified. --Bob

Minnesota has lost 82 games so the Twins cannot win more than 80 games. The White Sox have won 83 games so Minnesota cannot win the American League Central Division. Tampa Bay, Boston, the Yankees, and Toronto all have won at least 81 games, so the Twins will finish behind at least three non-division winners.

Ol' Man River may keep on rolling along, but the Twins' season will not. Minnesota has been toastified. --Bob

Washington has lost 86 games so the Nationals cannot win more than 76 games. Atlanta has won 76 games, Philadelphia has won 73 games, and the Mets have won 72 games, for a total of 221 wins. The Mets have 3 games remaining against the Braves and 3 games remaining against the Phillies. The Braves have 3 games remaining against the Phillies. Therefore, those three teams have to divide at least 230 wins among them, so at least one of them will win at least 77 games. Washington therefore cannot win the National League Eastern Division. San Francisco and Los Angeles each have won at least 83 games so the Nationals will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Milwaukee has won 89 games so Washington will finish behind the Brewers. The Padres have won 74 games, St. Louis has won 76 games, and San Diego and the Cardinals have 3 games remaining against each other. Therefore, at least one of those two teams will win at least 77 games and the Nationals will finish behind at least a second non-division winner in the National League Western Division or a non-division winner in the National League Central Division.

Let's hope Congress has a better year that the Nationals. Washington has been toastified. --Bob
